Favorite Bourbon

Thanks to this thread I went back for more Weller 12. I'll keep it for special occasions, listening mainly.

I'm told it will start drying up soon till next year. I'll really stock up next year.

Very Old Barton will become my regular pour.

From someone in Bourbon country who has tried and drunk almost all of the bourbon mentioned, I would have to say my everyday favorite is Knob Creek. It's 100 proof and goes down really smooth. Jim Beam black is an excellent bourbon for about 30% less. For a special treat Blanton's is awesome. Booker's is really good too but it's barrel proof which is around 130 proof and I need a little water in it. I did receive a bottle of 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle for Christmas this year but haven't tried it yet. The Van Winkle bourbons are so hard to get that for most people are not an option. One of my favorite drinks for bourbon is a Manhattan. The recipe is simple 3 parts bourbon, 1 part sweet vermouth, dash of Regan's orange bitters, dash of Angostura bitters. Stir in a glass full of ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a cherry!

I think this is a right of passage as I have the same story. Anyone like bulliet?

Rumple Minze at 19, thought I was gonna die. Love me some Bulleit. The rye is my sipper at this time. Basil Hayden puts out a wonderful bourbon as well but a bit more $$ than the Bulleit

Another nice Bourbon to add to the list is Willett. I don't know how widely this is distributed, but it's nice. I am having some on the rocks right now. A little pricey, about $34 for a 750 ml bottle here in Louisville.

I've been reading this thread for a while and trying a few different suggested Bourbons as I try to transition from Scotch. I had settled on Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban for a long time as the "house brand", so that was the flavor I was used to.

Coming over to Bourbon, the adventure started with Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, then Buffalo Trace, on over to W.L. Weller's Special Reserve, then Blanton's and now a hard stop at Old Weller Antique. This is good stuff! Very similar flavor to it's distant Scottish cousin. At this point, I may stop here for a while, but was intrigued by the Knob Creek Smoked Maple - anyone care to chime in on their take on the Smoked Maple?

You've found a good resting place. But... I'd recommend a quick trip to Weller 12.

Both Twin Liquors and Spec's have gotten shipments recently of this erratically available whiskey.

THE SAME JUICE as Pappy Van Winkle "Lot B," at 1/4 the price.

I bought the last Weller Antique on the shelf at my local Spec's today. Didn't know to look for the '12'. I've got a few locations around here to choose from - should come up lucky.

Really? I need to find this then, because i have always liked "Lot B"
Thanks for the info.

The difference between PVW 'Lot B' and Weller 12 is that PVW gets 'first pick' of the barrels come bottling time. The result being (according to some, but not all reviewers) that the PVW is slightly better. Noticeably perhaps, but just.

Before my last bottle of 'Lot B' expired, I did an overlap test/taste. My taste buds weren't sensitive enough to detect much (if any) difference.

Weller is not the only one that makes bourbon for Van winkle. Buffalo Trace also does and probably others. I read a little history about Van Winkle this fall, I think it was in Louisville magazine. Over the years a lot of distilleries have contributed. The difference is they get their recipe and age it in their barrels in their warehouse.

Actually, all of the above labels (and many more) are owned by Sazerac. Quite a number of these originate from their Buffalo Trace distillery, including Buffalo Trace, Weller, Van Winkle, Blanton's and Eagle Rare.

Unfortunately, the secret is out on this. Weller 12 stays on local shelves here for all of a day or two once a year.

Tell me about it, the word's out here on the west coast too. :tears:
Oh well, I've still got a sip or two of Basil Hayden's, I think that I actually like the Weller 12 more. Could be because I'm a cheapskate, I guess :smoke:. Got some Ronnie Hawkins and the Band on in the background, life's good.

I know this is the FAVORITE bourbon page, but it seems more like the Weller 12 club.

Given the fact that it seems unlikely I am ever going to get my hands on a bottle here in Vermont, how about a few other recommendations for a neophyte?

So far I have tried, Knob Creek regular, Knob Creek 9 Single Barrel Reserve (too strong), Bulleit 10 year and Evan Williams Single Barrel 10 year which is my regular go to bourbon.

Thanks!
