Favorite Bourbon

Plans for this afternoon includes 2 fingers of Weller 12 and four new LPs I received in the last 2 weeks.

Hey Grainger! What are you gonna do after side "A"??

Aopisa, a lot of us here are Weller fans, worth seeking out. Here are 2 others that you should be able to find without too much difficulty, I think they are both worth trying. Eagle Rare & Elmer T. Lee, both always in stock in my liquor cabinet. Enjoy.

I will definitely keep my eye out for Weller. In the meantime, thanks for the alternate suggestions.

Weller along with Maker's Mark & Van Winkle, among others are "Wheaters" meaning their flavor profile comes from wheat over Rye. Quickly eyeballing your previous purchases, it looks like you have been mostly drinking traditional Rye based bourbons. ER & ETL should fit with what you have already tried. I find rye bourbons to be spicier than wheat bourbons which to my taste, are "softer".

Hi Aopisa, the Old Weller Antique 107 is a good one that isn't hard to find out here a couple of ice cubes will tone it down.

Basil Haydens is a very good one too, a little pricier.

Regards, Bob

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I would like to try some "wheaters" next.

Also, I forgot that I had a bottle of Basil Hayden's a few years ago when I was more into Scotch. I do recall that I liked it very much.

I did a little research on Van Winkle bourbon and found some interesting things about the company. They are still family owned, not owned by Sazarac, but they do have a deal with Buffalo trace to distill, warehouse, and bottle their bourbon. There is a good interview with the grandson of Pappy Van Winkle on the University of Ky. site. I don't have the thread handy, but just google Van Winkle bourbon history.

Shoot, you can do a search of this thread and turn up a LOT of Van Winkle info!
You all should, if you havent already, have a look at the straight bourbon.com site/forum.

Tried some Four Roses last night, Small Batch on the rocks, followed by Single Barrel, neat. The Single was a nice step up for me.

Weller 90* Mint Julep no sugar, yum!

Derby's on the back stretch ya know..... The Oaks is tomorrow!

Jim Beam Black Label. Not too pricey, smooth, excellent flavor. Like a Dynaco ST-35 with EFB.

A few too many Eagle Rare mint Juleps while watching the Derby on Saturday, at least I won our office pool!

Count me as in on that group! I watched the Derby with two fingers of Old Weller Antique 107 neat. I don't want to tone it down!

As a result of this thread I've been drinking some of the Weller 107 and have to say it's very good. Not quite up to Knob Creek but very good.

The 107 burns. Try the Weller 12 (as shown above, it's 90 proof). Whole different animal than the 107. Many place it above KC, although that's simply a matter of taste.

The Weller 12 is long gone around here. I really like the 107 on ice.

Had a big slug off a bottle of Basil Hayden on Friday night, passing it around at a party. Mighty smooth. Too smooth, perhaps? 80 proof. Great taste, though. But do I dig a little burn?

I had the same experience with Eagle Rare.

90 proof, yet I took a manly slug, only to be rewarded with buttery smoothness and a nice oak + sweet finish.

VERY impressive.
