Favorite Bourbon

Four Roses Single Barrel 2 for 1 scroe!

Happened to walk down the liquor aisle at Meijer today looking for sweet vermouth and found Four Roses Single Barrel on clearance for $19.65! There were only two bottles left and I took both of course. The MI state minimum price on this is $39.30.

Now, liquor on sale in MI for less than the minimum is an extremely rare occurrence. Usually it means the item is being discontinued.:tears: I noticed that the yellow label and the Small Batch Four Roses were gone from the shelf a week or so ago. I don't know if this is only a Meijer clearance or all liquor stores are doing so, as none of the liquor stores around here carry it in stock.

Michiganders may want to check their local Meijer for clearance sales on Four Roses. They also had a few other items marked down 50%.:drunk:

Looking at Maasdrop this afternoon I saw this:

In the immortal words of Ron Swanson, “Clear alcohols are for rich women on diets.” If you’re a Lagavulin lover, Bourbon binger, or just a general whiskey enthusiast, you need the proper accessories to accompany your drink. Instead of watering down your precious liquor with crushed ice, pop in a Whiskey Ball that chills your libation while minimizing dilution."

I ordered a pair of Whiskey Balls.

Let the comments fly!

Pappy van Winkle 20 year old would be my favourite bourbon, but is almost impossible to find now (and the price keeps going up astronomically). Maker's Mark is in the same taste spectrum, but less intense. But a lot cheaper. My everyday whisky is 40 Creek, which is an amazing bargain and has more of the bourbon vanilla and butterscotch tastes than other Canadian whiskies. For Scotch, Lagavulin, but having a dram of that is a major commitment to having that flavour in your mouth for the next 24 hours………….

I live right on the Kentucky border. (the Indiana side). Close enough to hop, skip and jump over the bridge for some of the lesser-known stuff. I'm a cheapskate though, I rarely spend more than $15 for a bottle.

some I like though:

George Dickel red label (this actually isn't made anymore but most of the liquor stores still have inventory)

Cody Road (small distillery in Davenport, Iowa. Not far from American Pickers)

Very Old Barton, BIB (100 proof), spicy stuff, a very "in-your-face" bourbon which is what I prefer these days

Old Grand Dad 114, too smooth for what's it's got. This stuff could get you in some trouble

Rebel Reserve - smoothness of a wheated, flavor of a rye. and cheap for the quality

Old Forester - this good stuff right here, one of my go-tos

I've grown to really enjoy the taste of the more inexpensive lesser-knowns. Not that I don't still enjoy something high-end like my Blanton's but I get a kick out of trying new underrated stuff.

If you want a good bourbon for not a lot of money you should try the Trader Joe's brand. 90 proof made at the Buffalo Trace distillery. It's 14.99 in Louisville.

I have a nephew and wife, his not mine, in Lexington. When we visit next I will see if there is a Trader Joe's available.

To poultrygeist, you either have no wife or one who understands a "half gallon" (no such thing today) in the freezer. I did that in the 80s.

I'm going for something different 30 years later.

It doesn't work for me either as that's where the wife keeps her Absolut. :D

Wow, I had no idea they sold bourbon. They must not be licensed to sell it where I live. I'd love to try it - they have such good values on beer and wine.

Would love to find that VOB/BIB down here, but apparently none makes it this far anymore. But I take consolation in $20 1.75 bottles of VOB 86. Great house bourbon.

That OGD 114 is pretty remarkable stuff. You're right, it's way smoother than its caliber. Drinking it now.

But as for Rebel Reserve... the RR (to me, IMO) is not as good as Weller SR, and Rebel Yell is just sad now (80 proof is worthless). Rebel Yell was my preferred bourbon for years (during the S-W years), and boy-howdy I sure miss it. I wish Buffalo Trace/Sazerac would buy that brand and return it to it's glory. Down here RR is running $27 a .750, and that's more than Weller 12!

Well, it's all about value. The same Rebel Reserve is 11.99 in my neck of the woods. If I were spending $27 on a bottle I wouldn't even consider it.

Yes sir. For $12, most of my complaints would melt away. So what does Rebel Yell sell for there?

Should I say, "My whiskey balls didn't come."?

I went to the liquor store yesterday for my 6 week supply of VOB. On the top shelf was a different (1.75l) bottle of VOB for $3 more. It was the only one there. I bought it.

When home I saw it was VOB BIB 100 Proof. I don't usually like anything above 90 proof. But this is different. This is good stuff for only a tiny amount more.

Bummer, I bought my boss the 4 ball set for his birthday, they came in less than a week.

We had talked about the concept or saw them someplace or something, he knew exactly what they were. He likes ice, though. All I need is a glass.

Spec's lists a 100 proof Barton (750ml for $14.41). It may be available in Austin, maybe Waco; downtown Houston and 3 other stores are listed as "call store."
