Favorite Bourbon

Got this for Christmas, haven't had a special enough occasion to drink it yet.

That is some tasty stuff!

My everyday drinking bourbon is Old Forester Signature (aged longer and higher proof than regular Old Forester). Woodford, Basil Hayden, and younger Van Winkles when we are entertaining. Pappy 20 & 23 year for the special occasions!

Being from where you are, I guess you can find one of those in a gas station? :D ...kidding but probably a lot easier than here.

Out here in the NW, it's almost impossible to find any pappy stuff.

Pappy's is very hard to get here as well. Ten years ago you walk into almost any liquor store and grab a bottle. These days you need to get lucky or know someone who will hold a bottle or two back for you when the shipment comes in.

All but gone here in NYC, unless of course you want to pay 3-4x what it went for 5 years ago. I blame the Wine Spectator, they did an article a few years back saying you could drink the best bourbon in the country for $50 a bottle. That was like cat nip to wine guys who think nothing of dropping $100 a bottle on an unknown Napa Cabernet with no track record & little pedigree. Knuckleheads went out and bought everything they could find just so they could say, 'I'm sitting on some Pappy, I'm storing it with my flights of Screaming Eagle." Don't think it didn't happen.

I've given up on the "hunt" years and years ago. I think I left my number at around two dozen major stores back then. Not one of them called, and I didn't expect them to. :sigh:

Weller is not the only one that makes bourbon for Van winkle. Buffalo Trace also does and probably others. I read a little history about Van Winkle this fall, I think it was in Louisville magazine. Over the years a lot of distilleries have contributed. The difference is they get their recipe and age it in their barrels in their warehouse.

Sorry, I'm reading backwards from the last page...

Correct, the Van Winkles haven't distilled their own for decades (stopped in '70s if my memory serves). The last family distilled bottles available in Louisville or Lexington were gone back in the late '90s to maybe 2000 depending on where you went. The 20 year old sold for about $50-80 depending on when and where you bought (those were the days!).

I've been told on multiple occasions that Japanese execs came over for horse sales/racing and fell in love with the 20 year. They bought up all of the stock they could and shipped it home causing the initial gap in distribution several years ago.

Then this happened last year which didn't help the price one bit:

With the way the bourbon market is going, I would't be surprised to find most of the mothballed but repairable distilleries back in operation before long. When I was in Bardstown a few weeks ago, I heard that Heaven Hill's distillery was operating for the first time since 1982.

Giving the Costco brand a shot. It's alright but it ain't Weller. Oh well.

Mint Julep or Old Fashioned anyone?

PM, the link in Bobabode's post traces it back to Buffalo Trace. But the author says "it tastes like Jim Beam -- A little bit, anyway."

Considerable debate from tasters, but the Federal filings list Beam (again, IIRC).

I've never had any, as the Costco boxes in Texas can't sell it (no private labels liquors unless they are available to everybody).

That's all? Shucks, I'm a platinum card carrying member of the 'foot in mouth club'. I've been told to be good at SOMETHING, so if there is one thing I DO seem to be good at...

I've been a Weller 12 Year fan since I switched from those pricier scotches (Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban to be exact.) Was at the local Spec's and found this Weller Antique in the extra large bottle for a really nice price, so I couldn't resist.

Listening to some Nick Drake while working on this bottle. Must say, it's a pretty relaxing combination.

My local Weller Shop has had 107 and the stock 90 proof throughout the year. I keep asking about Weller 12. The answer is it comes during fall.

I have about 2" of Weller 12 in a 0.75 liter bottle. I have been listening to LPs all afternoon and decided to treat myself to a wee dram of the good stuff.

This reminds me why I want a case when it comes out this fall.

That'ld be my plan too. The Antique 107 has been a decent stand in for now. :thmbsp:

Definitely a step up from the standard Beam, it was $21 for a liter bottle.

Can't wait for the release of the Weller 12. Someday I'll get a taste of the Pappy Van Winkle but being as I'm on the Left Coast...:tears:
