Favorite Bourbon

I don't drink as I gave up the habit almost 30 years ago. However my wife enjoys a bourbon from time to time. Her preferences are Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek and finally Makers. I will cook with it and use it in BBQ sauces, etc.

I don't know how I missed posting this. A couple of weeks ago I was helping out a friend with electrical problems and questions. I was about to leave and he offered me a drink, he pulled a ceramic jug of Bourbon out, I don't remember what it was but it was good.....

The punchline is that he said, "One day we will uncork the bottle of Pappy."

I was stunned, I had never seen much less held a bottle. He pulled it from the sack and I got to hold a Pappy VanWinkle 23 for about a minute. Then I got scared I might drop it and carefully handed it back. He will remain a close friend.

Maybe someday I will also get to see/try some Pappy.

The local, Farragut, liquor store had a $20 bottle of Jefferson's Very Small Batch. I bought one. I don't know what other Jefferson's tastes like but this is very fruity.

I used to drink Southern Comfort straight out of the bottle. Got so sick one time I vowed to never drink that blasted liqueur again. Twenty six years later I'm still holding true to that vow.

Oh yes, the teen years! That happened to me too. Been over 40 years for me.

I have been drinking Jefferson's Ocean and Reserve. The Ocean has a little more complexity but for the extra money, the Reserve is just fine.

I finished off my small bottle of Liquid Riot Old Port Rye (Portland Maine) and so wishing I had brought home more. One of the best drinks I have sampled to date.

Peppermint Schnapps was another one that did me in. Haven't touched either of the two in 40 years myself.

Ha, I also had an issue with Peppermint Schnapps...as in my wife, then girlfriend, and I drank most of a bottle while driving 3 hours in the snow to our family cabin. That was the last time....some 35 years ago

Just went to Party Source. Been waiting a while, but they procured me a half-case of Very Old Barton Bottled In Bond 100 Proof at $23.49 per 1.75L.

VOB: Better than some more expensive bourbons; better than all less expensive bourbons.

I'm not picky...

On base they change what they are selling so often that the scotch I drink is from Scotland and the whiskey I drink is from Ireland. The names change but it's all the same, what's in a name ?

First off, this is a great thread! Recently went back and re-read from the beginning, it's like a time capsule. In the 10 years since this thread was started a lot has changed in the bourbon world. Pappy Van Winkle wasn't mentioned until post #62 and was talked about like any other regular bourbon, not the unicorn it has become. Buffalo Trace was somewhat unknown and not well distributed, Bulliet was the new kid in town, and there was no talk of lotteries, waiting lists or any of that stuff.

I turned 50 in February, and up until recently I had never explored the bourbon world. I've always been primarily a beer drinker, dabbled in scotch and enjoyed some "Boat Drinks" now and then. Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I decided the sugary drinks and high carb beer wasn't a good idea, plus the bloated feeling after a few beers was getting less appealing than ever. I decided if I was going to enjoy an occasional drink I would have to look for something different. Bourbon seemed like a good choice, cheaper than scotch, drinkable neat or with just ice and water and the official United States spirit to boot. Oh, and it didn't hurt how cool Raylan, Boyd, and Art looked drinking it.

So, here I am, acquiring a taste for the brown stuff, discovering my favorites and ready to talk bourbon. My first question to put to the group is this: Did anybody just immediately enjoy the taste of bourbon by itself? I had to start with mixers, like coke and ginger ale, then I moved to Old Fashioneds, gradually reducing the sugar, and now I am at the rocks stage. Still can't do neat very often. So, did anybody here start with bourbon neat and never look back?

Not me! Whiskey and coke then found the next day was less painful leaving the extra sugar out. Found the wheat's and left the rye behind. So now it's Iced Kentucky Tea for sippin.

I started drinking Bourbon my freshman year in college, fall 1967. I mixed with all kinds of stuff. A favorite was Rebel Yell, very popular at South Carolina. Then a year later we drank Stillbrook with water. Surprisingly it was good in water and rotten as a mix.

Welcome. Neat all the way, except for rare occasions (both scotch and bourbon).

From the start, I've only drunk whisk(e)y either neat or with a tiny splash of water. Once you adjust, you'll never turn back or use ice. One exception - A mint julep watching the Kentucky Derby or while at Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans.
