The Move- Split Ends
Sweet- Desolation Blvd.
David Bowie- The Man Who Sold The World
Humble Pie- Rockin' The Fillmore
Cheap Trick- First album and In Color
UFO- Phenomenom
Jack Bruce- Songs For A Tailor

Not sure if these are under-rated but a few suggestions:
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
Greatful Dead - Terrapin Station
Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare
Rolling Stones - 12x5
Chicago Transit Authority - selftitled
CCR - Willy And The Poor Boys
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Fillmore
Canned Heat - Boogie With

Joe Walsh early records:

Barnstorm
So What

Just about any of his records.

S.J.

A few of my favorites:

Dust - Self Titled
Dust - Hard Attack
Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come
Uriah Heep - Very 'eavy...Very 'umble

All Joni Mitchell records of that period. She is a total genius but sadly the mainstream rock doesn't think too high of her. She may as well be the most important female musician of the last 50 years...

As for other underrated albums, not exactly rock but Stevie Wonder's "Where i'm coming from" is an amazing record, particularly the track "Sunshine in their eyes", while most SW fanatics don't know the record. It is usually never mentioned where other SW records like "Songs in the Key of Life" or "Talking book" would.

Agree on Joni Mitchell, presently enjoying replaying definitely one of the more underrated albums by her; Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. Incredible studio album so well recorded it's on 4-15 Minuit sides for full dynamics, Paprika Plains a masterpiece IMO.

Also +1 for Terrapin Station by GD..

Frank Zappa's "Sleep Dirt" and "Studio Tan" are never ranked as his best records but IMHO those two are some of the best records ever... just listen to:

RDNZL
The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution
and
Greggary Peccary

those three are simply...
(leaves you without words)

Another underrated one: Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head" (1992). A supreme marriage of hip-hop, alternative rock, and good sense of humor.

MOST UNDERRATED of all time, for me, would be Magma's "Mekhanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" (MDK) which some days i feel it's the best thing ever commited to tape in the story of modern tape recording. Truly at the level of the Greats like Beethoven/Stravinsky/Orff etc.

When I hear the words "Classic Rock" I cringe, expecting the worst, "Hotel California", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Back In Black", "Welcome To The Jungle" and about 200-300 other songs that have been shoved down our throats repeatedly over the past 30-40 years. Not that these are bad songs.... Hey they were good for a couple weeks in '74 but after that became incredibly tiresome and boring.

So I would argue there's no such thing as an "underrated Classic Rock LP." Most of this overplayed dreck has been hyped way beyond reason. If I never hear any Classic Rock (or New Country) on commercial radio for the rest of my life I'd be a happy camper.

Maybe a better question would be:

What are some of the great Rock LPs that never got any radio airplay?

Youngbloods - Elephant Mountain

And, of course, no Beatles album can really be considered "underrated", per se, but "Yesterday...and Today" deserves a lot more attention.

Neil Young? The Doors? Joni Mitchell? Rolling Stones???

Anyone familiar with classic rock at all knows those albums.

I will be checking out Robert Gordon or Dust, though. Keep those kind of suggestions coming.

Here are a few of mine...

Utopia - Oops! Wrong Planet Part Beatles, part prog, but much poppier than their earlier incarnations. Their original version of Love is the Answer blows away the hit cover.

Funky Kings - Funky Kings Anybody who likes The Eagles needs to check this one out. Again, their original version of Slow Dancin' blows away the hit cover. Greg Leisz steel on that track is to die for.

NRBQ - At Yankee Stadium Are they classic rock? I don't know what they are, but they are of that era and this is a stellar album.

I'll think of more later.

This is easy, Big Star!! Any of them.

... also, Foghat's pre-Fool For The City stuff has been a recent pleasure of mine. Man, a really good boogie band.
