Most underated classic rock lp's

Deep Purple - In Rock
David Bowie - Low
Blondie - Eat to the Beat
The Sherbs - The Skill
A blanket of secrecy - the Ears have walls

Agree on all Joni Mitchell and John Barleycorn. Also..
"Tubular Bells", Mike Oldfield.
"Past,Present and Future", Al Stewart.
"Motherlode" Loggins and Messina.
"Hummingbird" Seals and Croft.
"The Child is the Father of the Man" Blood,Sweat and Tears.

I got this recommendation from another AK'er...Radiators-'Law of the Fish',very well recorded "little feat influenced",get the vinyl! Also,John Hiatt's 'Perfectly good guitar'.I would also recommend Lucinda Williams' 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road'[not available on vinyl yet],finally..get some Badfinger vinyl.

My Morning Jacket- It Still Moves.

Wait, that's something newer that sounds like classic rock....

But I think most fans of classic rock could get into it.

This is one of my favorite Rock albums from the group called Automatic Man.

Their sound on this album is Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys + David Bowie + Yes.

Highly recommended.

When I hear the words "Classic Rock" I cringe, expecting the worst, "Hotel California", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Back In Black", "Welcome To The Jungle" and about 200-300 other songs that have been shoved down our throats repeatedly over the past 30-40 years. Not that these are bad songs.... Hey they were good for a couple weeks in '74 but after that became incredibly tiresome and boring.

Looks like you have been going through my album collection :lmao:

I did in fact play Hotel California and Skynard's Gold & Platinum today :thmbsp:

Ahh...The memories!

Procol Harum: A Salty Dog
Small Faces: Ogden's Nut-Gone Flake
The Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers
Traffic: Traffic

Joni Mitchell's stuff-totally agree
Zappa's The Grand Wazoo and Waka Jawaka-even though they're avant garde jazz/rock it's amazing stuff that's not often mentioned and some of his best, IMHO
Free's Heartbreaker-Great early Paul Rogers
Hendix's Cry of Love album
Skynyrds' Gimme Back My Bullets

Fun Thread...
Love some of the bands mentioned and will certainly be checking out these albums/groups I'm not familiar with.

**Wishbone ash**..wow.....heard of them but don't really know their catalog at all....! Thanks for mentioning them...

It's actually REALLY hard to think of Classic Rock Bands whose albums didn't do well. I guess that would mean bad Sales or critical reviews.

Classic Rock for me is:
-rock music from the early 60's to the mid 80's?
With all this in mind....
My entry would be:
Anything by the Ramones

High Time by The MC5
Kill City by Iggy Pop and James Williamson (aka the lost The Stooges album)
Blank Generation by Richard Hell and Voidoids
Marquee Moon by Television
Adventure by Television
Lust For Life by Iggy Pop/David Bowie

Also, if Axl Rose had written different lyrics for One In A Million, it'd be one of rock's all time classics. Damn that song is otherwise really, really good.

I would also like to add Back Door Men by the Shadows of Knight. A northwest suburban Chicago group in the mid 60's that had a big hit with Gloria.

So i would argue there's no such thing as an "underrated classic rock lp." most of this overplayed dreck has been hyped way beyond reason. If i never hear any classic rock (or new country) on commercial radio for the rest of my life i'd be a happy camper.

Maybe a better question would be:

What are some of the great rock lps that never got any radio airplay?

this!!!!

Moby Grape

Spirit, seconding the recommendation above.

Earlier Fleetwood Mac, like "Then Play On"

Sparks, "Kimono My House"

"THE KINGSMEN In Person"...

The Wand LP, not the Sundazed CD. The sound is that of a recorded-live album. However there are rumors it is just crowd noise over studio recordings, something I don't want to believe because the mix on the album does a great job of putting the listener in a dark club with the band playing to a crowd as much concerned with it's own conversations as with the band. It sounds real, and the band's playing comes through as more polished than one would expect, something the crowd seems to appreciate as it does manage to applaud and cheer at appropriate times.

Even though the reissue CD has a few extra songs some of the tracks are compromised because crowd noise has been elevated enough to cover the band's playing.

Not sure if these are under-rated but a few suggestions:
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
Greatful Dead - Terrapin Station
Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare
Rolling Stones - 12x5
Chicago Transit Authority - selftitled
CCR - Willy And The Poor Boys
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Fillmore
Canned Heat - Boogie With

Yea, "Thick As a Brick" is a masterpiece, IMHO.

am I the only one who thinks Joni Mitchell sounds like a bag of cats?

in a punk-ish vein:
anything by The Velvet Underground
Lou Reed - Rock & Roll Animal
anything by The Stooges
