Rega Owner's Thread

The Groovetracer upgrade is definitely noticeable as soon as you install it. It tighten everything up. I used a Wilco album for the before and after. With the Rega stock subplatter, Tweedy's voice was a little loose in the center. With the GT, the vocals were more focused and full. Definitely have no regrets. Also, it makes it easier to place records on the platter being shiny vs. the black spindle on black felt you get with the Rega stock subplatter :)

I will try to answer your questions as best I can.

With the original plastic Rega sub-platter there was a "wah-wah'" effect that was most noticeable on music that contained solo piano or solo acoustic guitar. Rega owners attributed this effect to the stock platter being somewhat "out of round".

The new sub-platter is precision machined to eliminate the "out of round" of the stock Rega platter. Because the new sub-platter is round, the "wah-wah" sound has been eliminated. Solo piano and solo acoustic guitar sound much more solid.

I do not use a mat with the acrylic platter. There may be advantages to using a mat, such as changing records on the fly, but this is not an issue for me.

Thanks. I have noticed that slight wah-wah sound on my Planar. Is that what refer to as "wow" or "flutter"?

I will consider the subplatter upgrade. Does it take much to install?
 
I just got off the phone with my (drug) dealer and it looks like i'm getting a couple upgrades for my RP1. I'm getting:

White belt

Funk Firm 3mm mat

Bias 2

I can't wait! My 1200 is still my favorite TT but I am happy I took the Rega out of retirement.

As for installation, it took me ten minutes to read and reread the supplied directions, and three minutes to install the new sub-platter.

It is a very easy and painless procedure.

Although others have commented on this question, I'll go ahead and offer my opinion on the matter. I am not convinced that the stock subplatters have been so out-of-round as to cause audible wow. I therefore don't think the machined metal subplatter is the answer to problems with wow or flutter. I do believe entry-level Rega turntables prior to the P1 era have historically run a tiny bit fast, which I suspect might be due to Rega's designing the intentionally weak system to account for stylus drag. This is not a totally original thought on my part. In a review of a Rega turntable, Tone Audio mentioned stylus drag being a conscious consideration in Rega's design, although Tone didn't assign this the blame for earlier Rega turntables being fast. One thing a machined subplatter can do for you is assure you of the correct diameter, down to the thousandth of an inch, meaning the turntable should run at the correct speed if it didn't before.

So what do I think caused the wow owners of the Planar 2 and 3 experienced? Probably inadequately or incorrectly maintained lubrication and belts. So how then do I explain a GrooveTracer resolving the wow issue? Frank provides the correct lubricant and instructions on how to apply it.

With that being said, I strongly recommend a GrooveTracer subplatter. Why? Because, as has been mentioned, it tightens things up nicely. It improves the grip on the sound and lowers the noise floor. It reduced a slight coarseness in the sound that I didn't know existed until I removed the GT subplatter and re-installed the stock subplatter. I had forgotten about the improvement and thought I might as well just sell the GT subplatter and spend the money on something else. As soon as I spent a few minutes with the stock subplatter, I took down my for-sale ad and re-installed the GrooveTracer. And by the way...I agree it's easier to put a record on it than with the stock subplatter.
 
Nothing wrong with my early 80's Planar 3 and its sub platter. Love it to bits.

For those of you who have a white belt on your table, is there really a difference over the standard belts and if so what is it?
 
On my P25, I've noticed tighter speed stability vs the non white belt. Maybe a bit better sound but nothing I can describe.
 
I ended up getting the regular Performance Pack and a Rega Mini Fono. I definitely take back any bad thing I said about the RP1. I'm loving it now.
 
Really loving my P3-2000. Also love the whole "set it and forget it" moto. I ordered a Music Hall Cruise Control 2.0 so I don't have to lift the platter anymore to change speeds. Can't wait to get it in.

For those using a clamp with your Rega, do you turn the TT off when installing the clamp or taking it off? At first I would just hold the platter and put it on but i'm wondering if that would do any damage to the motor or bearing.

But looking at the pics, I can't see if there's an "R" in front of the "P6".

I'm really interested what does it offer over RP3, except metal subplatter and glossy finishes.
 
And what did happen to the RB700? Are they reserving that for only the P7 (or the future RP7)? I'm also surprised they chose to do away with the wood frame around the plinth. It does just look like an RP3 with a metal subplatter, thicker platter and gloss and chrome finishes. Not sure why they made it so similar to the RP3.
 
Yeah, very very similar to the RP3. Nevertheless, great news from Rega.

I've read somewhere that RB303 is very very similar to the RB700.

I just aquired a Moth OEM= AKA RB250 when I just purchased a VPI HW-19JR and was thinking about doing the Origin Live upgrade to it- any recommendations on what I should have them upgrade? Let them go the whole nine yards on it?
