The Pioneer "eXclusive" Gear Thread!

Thanks. I have a P3 and it doesn’t fit the tonearm(P3 has studs and not holes). They must have changed the VTA when they released the P3a to holes.

appreciate the feedback.

you're correct. I used to own both a P3 and a P3a (kept the P3) and the P3s indeed has holes instead of the hubs that or on the P3 or P10. I believe the PL-70 has holes as well.

Hi all,

Happy owner of a P3 recently imported from Japan.

I'm told the damping fluid was removed from the arm prior to shipping and of course I would like to replenish it. From what I have been able to find, "You can get Jelco DO-01 Tonearm Oil. I use silicone oil from 20 000 to 50 000 cst. Original Pioneer part is GEM1058, which is 200 000 cst.
For me both Jelco and Pioneer are too thick
." Hennesey

My issue though is how to refill it in the absence of a manual. Is it simply to pull off the top of the damping dial on the arm and look for a level indicator perhaps? Any help from more experienced owners will be very welcome and gratefully received.

I do not own a P3 but had a 50Lii with a slightly similar tonearm. The top round piece of the tonearm should lift off and the oil goes in the outer section. Be very careful not to get any oil in the inner circle. I think there was a line.

Cheers Mark, I have some 30, 50 and 300,000 stuff on order which is normally used for diffs and shocks on RC cars to try. Thanks very much again for your help

I've re-capped and cleaned out a C3 & M4 and adore them. But I'm wondering if there's any sonic benefits to upgrading to the C3a & M4a?

I suppose you could upgrade the film caps in the C3/M4 and you're already most of the way there?

The C3 has a very slight "hiss"/noise floor if you put your ear near the speakers. Seems to be a side effect of having so much gain in the line stage.

I wonder if they address that at all with the C3a

I have the C3A and the M4A and have not heard the M3 & C3 to be able to tell you a difference. I only listen to vinyl and I have to turn the volume up about half way to hear anything even with headphones. At half way, which is really really loud if music was playing, I can start to hear the noise from the vinyl/cartridge in the empty grooves.

The interesting part about the hiss with my C3 is that it's the same regardless of the volume or trim level... just a constant noise floor (unless I turn the output switch to Off)

Thank you!
Which one of tad speakers you liked more? Which would you recommend? Why already sold them all?
And what is first series of exclusive you mentioned?
Nice setup! get yourself a pair of proper eXclusive speakers to match it.. I used to own all of those components and used them first with a pair 0f 3401, than 2402 and later TAD M1. Sold most of those quite some years ago. Nowadays I go with the first series of eXclusive components.

the V7 holds no other technical value nowadays than remote controlling your C7. Of course it's still a very nice item and sure it would be nice to connect a HLD-X9, a HLD-X0 and your DV-AX10 to it, add a BDP-LX91 just to complete the series..

One question that's been floating around in my mind... how do modern phono preamps (including tubes) compare to the phono stages of these TOTL vintage preamps such as the C3?

I've noticed that in most of the images shared in this thread, external phono preamps are absent. Maybe that's my answer right there... :)

I think you would have a hard time finding something better. These were designed at the height of the turntable era and were even designed to use three tables with variable loads. With a good step up they are fantastic. My C3a is definitely better than the Project tubebox DS2 I had. The DS2 while not high end is a very good phono pre amp.

Thanks, Mark!

Btw, is it the case that the C3a has an option for both MC & MM carts, while the C3 is only MM? I feel like I've read that somewhere on this site previously.

So I have a p3 in hand which is a stunning piece of kit which inspires me to look at other exclusive kit. I'm thinking M5 amps but worry about the aging electronics. Are service manuals readily available?

You're correct to worry. :)

These aren't inexpensive pieces of gear, tho I find they're actually quite a bargain when compared to other options.

The downside is that you'll want to have them serviced. I've re-capped both of mine. Fortunately, schematics are available online.

Hi everyone,

I just acquired an eXclusive M4A. It's being imported from japan (it will take about a month to arrive plus I need a 100v converter which is currently being hand-made) and according to the ad it was checked up, serviced, and confirmed fully working.

I'm just wondering if anyone here with the M3/M4/M4A has tried to use them as headphone amplifiers, specifically Stax, since I intend that to be it's main purpose and I don't know how well it will perform... Some would call me crazy but I'm currently using a Sony TA-N86 in class A mode as my one and only headphone amp and I truly love it :)

So hopefully the M4A will be able to stack up and compete in sound. It definitely was very very expensive since like I said it comes in excellent condition and fully serviced, and shipping such a big monster from japan to spain isn't exactly cheap.

Appreciate all the input or ideas on this if you guys have any.

Cheers.
