The ultimate speaker you want, but do not have

I can't get away from vintage, Eggleston Works Andra.

Given the funds to go high end, my dream speaker would be a DIY single driver omni directional with an alluminim phase plug with a range of 70 Hz to 30 KHz. The pair would be used with 4 subwoofers (see Marc mc's post in the thread "To Use or Not Use a Subwoofer" in the Thinking Outloud section). The driver would be a true high end driver mounted in a sealed enclosure. The subs would be ported. :thmbsp:

Vintage - Those honkin' big Infinity Reference speakers with the EMIT tweeter (I don't even know the model number).
Modern - B&W Nautilus
Within the realm of possibility - Ascend Sierra Towers with the RAAL ribbon tweeter upgrade, Ascend Horizon center and a pair of Rhythmik 12" sealed servo subs.

Ah yes, forgot about the B&W Nautilus. I auditioned those, very very nice! Although to my ears the Paradigm Studio 100s I put up against them came close to besting the Nautilus subtly, but it was so close one had to strain their ears to hear the difference, but it was there. Just my ears though, we all hear differently. If I had the money though I'd still run right out and get the Nautilus!

Quads. Nothing else will replace my Reference 3A's.
Which 3A's do you have? There is a pair of one of the floorstanding models in the shop here which I have heard many times and always was struck by.... in the best sort of way.

I spent a long time listening to Quads at the last AKFest I attended and was completely enchanted. Those and the Harbeths had my ears for the day for sure.

They may not be a speaker to end all speakers, but I'd sure like to get my hands on some AR9's of one sort of the other and spend some quality time with them. There is a curiosity that wants to be fulfilled there.

Not that much. Just have hardwood floors installed and throw that bad boy to the curb! :D

My vote here, a nice set of K-Horns, especially since I have one corner already set for placement. I'd just have to do some light construction in the other to make it work. I wouldn't tick off the neighbors too much, I promise!

I've heard a number of very high end systems but to be honest, I just don't think in terms of the very high end. My favorite speakers have probably been the Aerial 10ts. Without building a dedicated room, they'd probably my top choice regardless of cost.

My current satellite speakers are fairly close to optimal for my listening needs in the home office and studio. No large main speakers would fit either setting.

The main place for improvement would be in bass management (and I'll second the reference to the current TOL thread on that). Even that would be somewhat overkill in the home office system, since the room is a pretty good actor in terms of bass response and it is, after all, a home office. OTOH, it would be handy to have smoother bass response in the studio from a system of subs, rather than just one.

Cheers,

Otto

I'd be tempted to go the diy route if I had the money to afford the 'Ultimate'.

The type of drivers I'd be looking at would be a plasma tweeter, possibly a horn loaded beryllium dome compression driver midrange (just a thought) and a couple of gigantic horns (10 foot by 10 foot) using large area ribbon panel bass sections.

Mmm smell the Ozone. :D

All active with custom designed mono amps for each driver. Each amp will incorporate its crossover on the input stage.

Why buy someone elses idea of Ultimate?

Hey, nice Kirby. At least as vacuum cleaners go the SQ isn't bad, not so many nasty odd-order harmonics as the newer plastic models. Could be worse! :D The finacée and I have a matching set of the things. When we get married in Spring and finally are in one house we will be able to switch from mono to stereo.
