What is the most inovative rock LP of all time?

[jhtstone]

Led Zeppelin III

A whole different style.

[Karl vd Berg]

Black Sabbath, 1st album (1970)

[Tom Brennan]

Black Sabbath, 1st album (1970)

In that vein I would argue for the first Blue Cheer album, Vincebus Eruptum, from 1968. And their 45 of "Summertime Blues".

the pretty things ~ S.F. Sorrow

You may have the best avatar I've ever seen. I can't stop laughing.

I don't believe popularity excludes innovation

Freak Out - first rock double LP.

I call that innovation. :thmbsp:

[Spookyfoot]

For me it would be between these…

Yes - The Yes Album
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Touch - Touch
Frank Zappa - Freak Out
ELP - Tarkus
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick

[boojum]

Sgt Pepper

+1 Sgt Pepper - As with E. Hemmingway, many like to dismiss the Beatles now that they no longer exist. Might as well dismiss Beethoven too, since he was and is so 'popular'. Being fringe and eccentric does not necessarily correlate with influential...

[hellhound94]

What is innovative to me and what is innovative to the rest of the world are possibly (probably?) two completely different things.

But I can tell you that, without a doubt, the most innovative rock music that I've ever heard, the music that instantly knocked me on my ass and changed my life, was "Are You Experienced" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Period.

Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
Paul McCartney has often credited Brian Wilson's 1966 masterpiece for inspiring Sgt. Peppers.

+1

Pet Sounds was a hugely important and influential album - if you ever read about the recording and production of that album, Brian Wilson did things never done before .... Pet Sounds laid the ground work for a lot of future records ....

I always thought people used baking trays... from what I've heard... cough

Impossible to underestimate the innovation of Brian Wilson, a once-in-a-forever composer.

Not easy: IMHO the bleow are all innovative :
Boston S/T
Fleetwood mac Rumours
Led Zep II
Abbey road
Doors first
and I dare to say it: Prince Purple Rain. There I said it!

Good call on Purple Rain...that one seems to have slipped through the cracks a bit.
