Interesting Noise Poll

I think this will make for an interesting Poll. When your System is completely on with a source selected and nothing playing, turn up your gain to 100%.

Vote for what you hear coming out of your speakers/tweeters at 1" away.

I have been working with a few AK'rs privately to tweak distracting noise from their Systems.

It will be beneficial to post the cures that work, at the same time see the results from the Poll.

no mc's here, but my 1959 electrohomes, and 1969 Tannoys, with my 1987 bryston 11B pre set to CD, and volume maxxed... I hear nothing!

I hear absolutely nothing from CD selection. Some very slight hiss from phono after volume reaches 75% position and beyond.

Very slight hiss from 12AX7A tube in phono pre , complete silence on CD and tuner.

The ribbon tweeters in my Maggies go to 40 kHz and I had to really listen to detect any hiss, the fan and disc drive from this laptop across the room was far more evident. This is a pretty quiet room given the acoustic treatments. Tried this on my CD input, I run balanced from my DAC to the pre and balanced from pre to MC402.

Other than that, all I hear tonight is Yo-Yo Ma

I went one step further and pulled out my SPL meter and measured the noise.

With volume at zero ambient room noise measured 31.4db.
With volume at 100, 1" from speaker noise measured 31.7db.

I'm happy with that but I did hear some low level hiss so that is how I voted.

When I was holding the meter my stomach gurgled and that measured 34.2db. :huge:

I hear a little hiss, except for the VCR and DVR inputs. Not a surprise there with cheap video components and really cheap interconnects for them.
Ivan doesn't have a fair comparison. He's only listening to 1/40th of the tweeters in one channel alone!

Great, great, test/poll Ivan.

I get some low-level hiss, but I would expect this from the tube pre-amp.

My bet is that ANYONE with any tubes in the pre/power amp gets some hiss - however faint. Any counter examples?
