Joke funniness is not a legal standard nor is it even relevant. The reasons why Smith's actions are considered criminal conduct in a civil society should be apparent. Physical violence is never an acceptable response to words (this side of credible physical threat). I suggest you think through your position through to its ultimate end before defending the indefensible.

I had not watched the video of Will **** until after I posted. My wife made me watch it. Staged for the affect, or senseless and totally unprovoked. Never liked the guy anyway so did not lose any respect.

I already have. I work in law enforcement and know the level of crime that was committed. If taken to court, the accused would be forced to pay a fine.
Nor was my “acceptance” of the act based on the quality (or lack thereof) of the humor. He insulted another man’s wife and paid for it.

I had the misfortune of seeing it live. I just happened to be channel-surfing at 10pm and I stopped on the Oscars. My take? If the joke was tasteless, Will should have shouted back something clever or witty. NOT resorted to physical violence. The longer the show went on, and he sat there, in frame, front-and-center, laughing the whole rest of the night like nothing happened, ticked me off. Then seeing him give his big speech, crying, talking about how "God is calling him to be a vessel of love"... I wanted to puke.
I literally can't believe he was able to walk up and strike a person, in front of so many people, and have no repercussions thus far. Anyone else would have been arrested on the spot.
The Streisand Effect is in full play on this one. That "GI Jane" joke would have just blown over. Many people, myself included, didn't get why it was supposed to be funny. I thought it was some inside joke. Now, because Will acted out, every news outlet everywhere is explaining why the joke was in poor taste, bringing attention to Jada's baldness, etc. So, yeah. Good job Will. Eye-roll.

What part of wife-insulting not being justification for physical violence do you not understand?
If the victim had a physical condition causing him to go down hitting his head on the floor resulting in severe physical injury or death, I'm sure as one "working in law enforcement" I don't have to tell you what charges Smith would be facing.
