I already have. I work in law enforcement and know the level of crime that was committed. If taken to court, the accused would be forced to pay a fine.

Nor was my “acceptance” of the act based on the quality (or lack thereof) the humor. He insulted another man’s wife and paid for it.

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly was the insult? I saw Rock say he was looking forward to seeing Jada in GI Joe 2.

What was the insult? That a more deserving Demi Moore got the original part?

And way were both Will and Jada both laughing at the joke a mere second before Will got up and made a scene?

I literally can't believe he was able to walk up and strike a person, in front of so many people, and have no repercussions thus far. Anyone else would have been arrested on the spot.

“Anyone else” in attendance there would have gotten away with it. Ordinary people were not invited. And had they been, they would have had to pay a fine for the privilege of committing the same act.

If the victim had a physical condition causing him to go down hitting his head on the floor resulting in severe physical injury or death, I'm sure as one "working in law enforcement" I don't have to tell you what charges Smith would be facing.

yes, but those circumstances did not materialize. The Law only works with “facts in evidence”, not supposition on hypothetical situations.

Demi Moore shaved her head for her character in G.I. Jane. Since Jada Smith has alopecia, she's been shaving her head, to minimize it's effects. So, Chris Rock pointed out that Jada's shaved head was in preparation for her staring in G.I. Jane 2. Not Chris Rock's best joke. But, it wasn't mean spirited. He even told Jada he loved her, before the joke. Will initially laughed at the joke, but Jada was visibly upset by the attention. Will reacted to that, it seems.

Personally, I disliked Will's response. Not his best moment. So far, Chris Rock has no interest in pressing charges.

I am very much a turn-the-other-cheek/defuse-the-situation person. The last physical altercation I was in, outside of martial arts training, was in seventh grade.

Having said that, about fifteen years ago my wife and I were out at a well-known establishment in our area, and it was packed. One "patron" who had been "patronizing" a few too many, was forcing his way to the bar next to my wife, who is tiny, going so far as to push hard enough the he partially shoved her off her chair... and then he proceeded to plant one of his butt-cheeks on her stool. It was really loud, and I couldn't get his attention verbally, so I flicked a small drop of cold water onto his neck. When he looked around to see where the water came from, I waved and took credit for it, then asked him to please get off my wife's bar stool. He went off., calling her all kinds of awful names. She started crying, and I stood there just staring at him while two of his buddies, aware of the situation, dragged him out of the bar.

I tell that story because, although I know how we handled it was correct... I have ALWAYS regretted not flattening him. He desperately deserved it. There are just some things you don't do. I never liked Chris Rock's work. I dislike him all the more intensely now, after reading about the incident last night. Will Smith should pay a price... and I respect him for being willing to stand up for his wife regardless of cost.

Now, as far as the Oscar's go, the show was OK. Never a big deal anymore. But, I do have to agree with Steven Spielberg, and I do wonder if streaming movies deserve to be Oscar nominated? While movies like Coda and Power of the Dog are excellent films, to me, they are basically well-done TV movies, having never played in a theater (to my knowledge). Should they be under consideration for an Oscar or an Emmy?

if the party that was assaulted later dies, and *if* it can be tied to the incident in question, then the accused could face a heavier sentence.

Firstly the WS/CR situation is not even remotely comparable to yours which even involved physically moving your wife's person off a chair.

If his own buddies dragged him out of the bar, that is vindication most of us can only dream of! And you're still not satisfied?

Listen cupcake, whether it's a misdemeanor or felony is not relevant. You are the one who chose to plant your flag on the mountain of justifying Smith's actions, you picked a damn fool mountain to plant it on.

As to word-twisting, there was none. The illustration I provided was to demonstrate the logical conclusion of actions you consider justifiable. Thankfully the criminal code differs from your position.
