Wow... nice looking speakers Pandu and Opt... never seen Concords and those Cresta's look awesome! :thmbsp:

Opt, can you pull the grills and give us a shot of the driver arrangement on those Concords?

I sold my q5's to a buddy making a convert out of him when I restored a pair of epicure 3's the last ones so i'm down to 3 pair of kef's.

Thanks 'SimplySound' :) I'm bringing down another pair from The UK E-Bay for a friend of mine. These are ideal for a start up system.

Never seen those before, how do they sound?

Sorry for the late response:

I find the Calinda excel in the mid range. Low frequency is good but not overly powerful. Type of speaker you can enjoy for long period, they wont get on your nerve like some other that I've.

$1500.00 can get you a pair of LS50, q900, r300, or a clean pair of 107/2's with kube, I have a 200 cu.YD listening room so I go Q900 or 107/2. We all know how great the 107/2's are and stereophile liked the Q900 but it would be pretty cool to get a members description.

Kef 103/3 owners - do you run yours with or without grills?

I've been experimenting with mine, and I find I can't stand the sound of them with the grills on. They sound congested and slightly distorted in the high frequencies. Take the grills off and they sound spacious with no weird high frequency distortion (well, I don't know if it's really distortion or not but it sure doesn't sound right).

Just curious if anyone else who has a set has found the same thing. If you look at the way the grill is designed, it makes sense that it would impede the sound quality.

what kind of stands are you guys using with the 103.2?

I had some big welded 20" Targets filled with sand but another set that worked surprisingly well were the original SL6 stands from Celestion. Also sand filled but wood or particle board plates and much light overall than the Targets, maybe a bit lower as well. Sounded great on those.

I also prefer the sound without. Same goes for my 107. When I asked him about that, our Kef rep told me they were designed with the grills in place so removing them would make them a bit brighter but no better. I disagreed, I think they sound better and it is not just because of slightly more HF information. Sounds more transparent and detailed to me. Maybe it is just my imagination but it's a moot point right now, not about to try that with the 3 cats around.

After setting friends up with 105.2s I asked them if they minded if we tried removing the grills from the heads, they said OK and both preferred them that way.

Interesting. I had a feeling they were designed with the grills on. I too find the same, that they are more detailed and transparent without them on.

I went and did something crazy. I decided to flip my 103/3s upside down and put them on stands. I figure hey, this will put the tweeter closer to ear level, and the bass will vent up into the room just like the 107!

Well, not quite, but interesting difference. The highs certainly seem like they "turned up" - not sure if this is a good thing yet. The bass diminished at first, but a quick correction using the KUBE and the bass is back. The bass is cleaner and airier sounding like this! The mids sound wonderful. But the highs.. I'm still unsure about what I'm hearing - probably because of what I am used to with the tweeter lower.

Raynald, do you happen to know if the 103/3 was designed with the tweeter's height on the KS103/3 stands in mind? The stands were optional so I'm thinking not, which is what made me think the 103/3s upside down might be pretty sweet. I may need to do some more tweaking/listening. Also, do you think you could measure from the ground to the middle of the tweeter on your 107? Just curious about what height they used for that tweeter on that model.

IIRC they were designed for the stands but the thing is you have to be at the right distance. The factory stands did not raise the speaker to have the tweeter at ear level. They raised it somewhat and angled it upwards. The tweeter would aim at your ear, but only at a given range.

BTW, I know yours are restored and probably fine, but turning a 103/3 upside down is NOT recommended. Any rot from the donut will instantly fall into the voice coil and ruin the woofer. Live and learn....

Yep mine are restored so no worries about that.

Hmm so getting them to ear level may be worthwhile. I'll have to try raising them on their stands.
