Speakers vs. Amplifier (Poll Included)

Speakers or amplifier?

I haven't noticed the OP (@Guest137 ) pop his head back in this thread/poll yet... Maybe the 17 year-old (according to his profile) is trying to get guidance for his first "good" stereo setup. If so, I hope he can look past all the bickering and simply focus on the overwhelming vote percentage for better speakers. It seems a lot have interpreted this poll differently than others. I took it as the perspective of a beginner looking for help. Maybe I'm wrong. But, thought it was fun to pick one answer over the other.
I thought this would be an interesting question to ask. I did not know that the thread would turn out like this. I do not have the desire or money to upgrade my current system.

How about we all take our worst speakers and pair them with our best amp and vice versa and that real world experience will remove the guesswork.

I'll go first......... my crummy little t amp does a surprisingly good job driving my khorns and my Mcintosh mc2500 was not a very good match for my ADS 200's. These are my findings and why I think better speakers with a poor amp is a better choice if you're stuck between a rock and hard place.
Edit having given this a little thought........ A better comparison than my Mac-ADS 200 pairing........ Sansui SP3500's paired with every single quality amp I owned at the time. End result bad sound every single time:)
OK, poor amp, decent speakers. This test was a modest success. Fairly sensitive Knight 12 inch single driver, good condition 8 watt 1972 Zenith receiver.

I currently have a Parasound Zamp3 powering some rather old and abused Bose 151's on my patio.. so that's cheap, low-powered (45w/ch @8 Ω but really clean) amp and meh speakers...

The speakers never sounded so good.

My take, if on a tight budget spend on the amplifier.
Then get the best speakers with the leftover cash.
Speakers reproduce the sound fed to them.
When buying speakers in a audio store the salesperson will use a quality source unless told otherwise.

Also a poor source can and will destroy speakers rather quickly.

Would you rather have a system with decent speakers and a poor amplifier, or a system with poor speakers and a decent amplifier?
Impossible to give a logical answer so I didn't.

Define "poor", particularly in terms of an amplifier. Unless it's totally inadequate for the task or faulty, an amp has less impact on the overall sound than the speakers.

My worst speakers still sound pretty good to me no matter what amp I have around here is used to play them with, vice versa is true as well.
Like I said earlier life is too short for lousy SQ and good SQ does'nt hafta cost big bucks today,so I dont see a reason to take a side in this pointless debate.
But see, too many are thinking a poor amp means small or little power, but that doesn't mean poor SQ so still a nice amp.
Bingo,,,this ^^^^ FTW...

Example: My $85.00 (incl. shipping) Sansui AU-217 + my $57.00 (also incl. shipping) JBL LX-22 speakers together exhibit incredibly good sound quality.
And I'm sure there are folks out there that would "ding" one or the other item as a poor example of their respective peers.

Heck even my Creative Zen Mosiac Mp3 player paired with my UE mini booms sound pretty d@ng sweet.

From my perspective most folks labeling something "poor" in this thread are just doing so based on lackluster synergy between any two given components.
Now THAT I've run into a time or two,but it usually can be over-come with some shffling of components to find better synergy.

But I honestly dont have any bad/poor amps -or- speakers around here,at least not by my measures.
Now for another fella I'm sure there's gear around here they'd absolutely wretch their guts out even thinking about listening to.
Of the two though,I'd bet most folks would find more poor examples of speakers than poor examples of amps around here.

But like I said earlier,it's all way too subjective, what some like others dont & vice versa.

JMO ~ YMMV

I had one, for about 4 months, in 1987. It really is.. a .. bad... amp.

Yes, this is what I was picturing in my head when I first posted on this thread. So my interpretation of the OPs question is that poor means that it sounds bad. No matter what you do, except maybe putting it in the trash and buying a better system.

Bret, this is exactly what I was trying to say earlier.

A very good sounding system can be cheap, and still have the kind of aesthetics you like. All that’s needed is synergy, that magical ingredient nobody can define and some don’t believe exists.

Its cheaper to replace a bad amplifier than it is to buy a good pair of speakers..

Not only cheaper, but easier to match up. Speaker performance is so "environment dependent" that if you find a pair that "works" in your room, they are "keepers". The "next best/better thing" may end up sounding like a** in your room--despite how the specs and reviews may read. Once you find speakers that are compatible with your environment, it is easy to swap amps in and out to find the best match for the speakers.

D. None of the above.

However, an efficient speaker with a low-powered, inexpensive receiver or integrated amp would be one bang-for-the-buck possibility I've done in past lean times.

These days, a really cheap class D amp with a decent pair of speakers can sound pretty darn good, though inputs are limited. That's what I do now in the garage.

I have trouble envisioning a scenario in which I must choose between decent and poor, depending upon how one defines decent, I guess. My little Fosi TP-3116 amp (about $65, Amazon) makes decent sound with a variety of bookshelf speakers (Paradigm, ads, NHT, Polk and others), imo.

Compared to my main system, it's like Little League to MLB, but some really high-end aficionados might consider my big rig merely decent.

I flirted with those little class D amps. I bought one and sent it back.....I now notice the attached cheap class D from a major player for about the same price.....might try one.....

The closest I've come to "great speakers, mediocre amplifier" was when I was running the Martin Logans off a Sony STR-ZA1000 ES multi-channel receiver. It wasn't so much a "bad" amp as it was not ideal for the purpose. Martin Logan /says/ the reQuests can be run with any amp capable of driving an 8 ohm nominal load... But that's kind of bullsh*t.

It's not as if they sounded like garbage with the Sony, but they certainly sound far, far better now.

WTF and here's another one of the many times I find myself wondering why do I waste my time here........ but at least I didn't waste my time "voting".

I have tried TOTL (in their vintage) speakers with not a poor amplifier (at least by my standards) but a cheap one and the result is good, at low to moderate levels.
As the amplifier is cheap, it has low power (2x32WRMS) so it can't really shake the house as the speakers like to have more than 100WRMS to sound alive.

The amplifier is a Luxman L-2 and the speakers are KEF Reference 105.

I have had similar experiences. Most notably a relatively cheap Sherbourn amp with good speakers that yielded very good results.

I was not very happy with my Knight, Heath and Dyna kts is why I switched to Scott and fisher. Then when I heard Mac amps and saw the difference on the charts at a Mac Clinic I was really un happy. So switched to Mac, Was Mac perfect, no. The MC 7200 was the first to come pretty close. Are my MC 207's equal to MC 301's, no, but where would I put 14 MC 301's. Or where would I put 7 MC 302's or 5 MC 303's? Thats why I stick with 207's. Plus they don't have those heavy autoformers. My speakers much prefer higher damping factors of the 07's any way.
