I would indulge....but this vinyls vs. records/albums/LPs thing has been done to death.

It's actually something I've never done - until this thread.

We don't all share the same life experiences. If I think a thread has been done to death, I just ignore it and let those who find it interesting have fun.

A twenty something at work referred to LP records as vinyls the same way we used to refer to condoms as rubbers.

Yeah, I'm an old fart who has been buying records since 1956. In the past I would get my panties in a wad over terminology.

I don't know the rest of the story, but it is interesting that this is what you chose to share. I hope focusing on terminology didn't prevent you from connecting to someone of another generation who shares a common interest. I know some twentysomethings who share my passion and love of music presented in all formats, including "vinyls".

I think though when we hear people saying this topic is bullshit, or complaining about such and such topic being done to death, it lends a negativity to the discussion. Remember newcomers want their voices heard too. And sometimes, long time readers have new viewpoints. So, if anyone wants to discuss drive systems, analog vs digital or whatever "overdone" topic for a 1000th time, they should be welcome to do so. Just skip the thread if you don't like it, right?

I agree. Every subject has probably been done to death or at least talked about. I guess some would prefer that this forum would be made "Read Only". Then you'll not have topics done to death.

When I was an avid bike rider I subscribed to a couple of bike magazines. After a few years I noticed that I was just getting the same twelve months of articles recycled but by different authors using different words.

There was always the springtime "get your bike ready for the biking season" article, etc. And you could get pretty much the exact same information just pulling your year old copy.

But for new subscribers it mattered.

Amusing. But not a good argument against using vinyls as the plural form of vinyl, given that vinyl means a single object, in this case a record. Note that the plural of record is records, the plural of LP is LPs and the plural of 45 is 45s. Given the context vinyls would seem to be the most natural and proper plural.

Vinyls is ok. If they have a slang word for what the rest of us call "LP's" or "records" it just means that they are listening to records and keeping the medium alive. It's ok.

Was at my fave vinyls store in Seattle a few weeks ago. Me and the owner were the oldest guys in there. Everyone else was probably under thirty. There was a young couple in there buying some cool titles and I thought, how nice that they can share an interest like this.
