Yamaha GT-2000 Turntable Social Group

I got this from Michal @ Mytek: MC transformer/ MC solid state input Gain 69dB impedance 1k , 500 or 100 Ohm
Beobloke, how do you determine that neither would be ideal? Again, I'm sensitive to bogging down the group with too many fundamental questions. If there is a resource you can point me towards, I'd be happy to read up.

its less to do with the configuration but more to do with the unit itself. Don’t get me wrong, what they’ve fitted performs surprisingly well but ultimately it’s an add-on function to a unit that’s primary function is a DAC.

My point was merely that you’ll get better performance from your GT-2000 by using a dedicated phono stage.

Funny you say this. These past couple days I've been looking into exactly that...

Now for some real controversy: my Kirmuss system arrives today!! I plan to record some before & after which I will share.

While I haven't used the Kirmuss, I can confirm the difference that ultrasonic makes in vocal clarity and highs. Everything cuts much sharper and vocal texture really stands out. It won't fix trashed records but it really gets results for those in reasonable condition.

Since you brought up ultrasonic cleaners, I have been considering this. https://www.kickstarter.com/project...ru-all-in-one-ultrasonic-vinyl-record-cleaner

I had made my own ultrasonic cleaner, but stopped using it and went with two Spin Cleans, one to clean and one to rinse. The ultrasonic cleaner worked but I had no way of rinsing the records, a few mins in the ultrasonic and then left to stand and dry, vs a few spins in a solution and a few more in the rinse and left to stand proved a little more effective and less time consuming.

With this Hummingguru I could sonic clean in a solution and reclean with a rinse cycle then it will dry for me too and for half the price of the Kirmuss. It's very tempting.

This looks very tempting that was one of the main reasons i did not want to ultrasonically clean my records bec of the drying. I am already using an Okki Nokki VaCu.

I joined it on the first day, with the intention of cancelling as their shipping policy is unfair (to me). They have an 'one price' shipping which is very expensive for someone who lives in Hong Kong where (they say) they are based. I have a kuzma vacuum unit that works fine but wakes up the whole block with its noise.

Anybody with thoughts on the PS Audio Stellar Phono? Stereophile seems to love it...

I plan to use my vacuum machine for the drying process, even though the Doctor Kirmuss guy thinks they are the devil.

For everyone who like to know. My Zephyr MK III has now 50+ hours. Now the bass gets really weighty. Heighs stay the same although.
Some records don't get better, but 50% and more records tremendously benefit from my new cartridge.

Thanks Theophile,

the only thing I do like to add is that the additional weight I did put on the arm I believe it helped. Furthermore I think that the 6 Gramm headshell is also benefical.

Ideally would be an single new weight made from steal or even better tungson, which I did not have. The additional weight is made from wood fixed by screw with a plastic part at the end and 2 metall plates are clued to.

I do not know of course I only assume. But as I am very pleased with the results I don't want to change the setup again and again to confirm my impressions. Prefer listening.

Of course I would not mind to own a Soundsmith strain gauge as you do. Just dreaming. But I am very pleased with my actual cartridge, it is a bigger step already.

How do you like the vacuum mat? Big difference?

Dear 808_state,

I am not sure because I dislike hearing again and again. But one thing I did test and this showed a major difference:
cartridge on the record, amps volume in usual listening position
- record on the standart mat, knock with my finger knuckless on the record: you can hear a low thumb in the speaker.
- record on the vacuum mat, knock with my finger knuckless on the record: you can hear nothing in the speaker.

This tells me that resonances are well drawn away. No, or very less, feedback may go back to the cartridge. At least at this frequency. Very promising though.

I will not replace the vacuum mat. Actual the Zephyr MKIII is pumping so much bass out of the records, and extracts so many wonderful smallest listing events that I assume the vaccum mat may help in this repect.
One thing I found out: they might all have problems due to age with holding the vaccum. But two things help in this respect:
- clean the rubber regulary to wipe the dust off
- from time to time use a rubber protectant

I watched a video by Swedish Audio Technologies (explaining one of their tonearm designs) and the guy said he thought a vacuum mat made one of the single biggest differences he had heard. Wish someone would resurrect them like the AT/Yamaha one. I've also wondered if the GT platter was designed with an outer ring accessory in mind but it never happened.
