Yamaha GT-2000 Turntable Social Group

It looks great. What do you think of the sound?

I have been hesitant to post my findings until I had spent more time listening in both a relaxed state and also carrying out a more critical A / B analysis as I wanted to be 100% sure that there was no placebo effect going on. Also, I have to say that I was very skeptical when I purchased it but it came at a very reasonable price that I thought, what the heck, I can always flip it.

After spending some time I can confirm that it provides similar improvements I experienced when I first installed my acoustic panels in that it brings improvements to the resolution and clarity of the micro details in the recording. It now feels like a little bit more is going on in the recordings that was somewhat masked by the rubber mat. Also with the improvements to resolution it also improves imaging and gives that little bit of extra space/air in between the instruments and vocals.

With regards to the upper, mid and lower frequencies I cannot detect any noticeable changes and everything sounds similar in tone. I think some people have experienced a tighter and deeper bass and an improvement in upper frequencies using this mat, but I can't say I have noticed it.

Also the soundstage has stayed similar which is no big deal as it was already huge without this mat.

In summary I am happy with the improvements.

This is why I stress only very slightly loosening this bolt. Don't completely unslacken. Leave a bit of bite on the the armtube. If you can manually adjust the headshell(ie move it) while it still bites the arm tube, that is desirable.

In light of your head shell bolt difficulties: Does the above make sense?
Thank you Theo for the advices

hi Theo,

Thank you for the advice. I’m going to attempt another round of dialing in the head shell with your tip. Btw this 2000x is ridiculous already with my ametuer attempt at setup. The sound stage is wide and at times disappears as if the trio is in my living room.

The bottom is something I’ve never experienced, just wow!
I’m truly grateful to have found this thread. Thanks to all here

Thank you for sharing your listening impressions. Like you I find that extended listening is needed to evaluate changes in my system.

Can I get a count of those that would be interested in ordering an aftermarket YGT-1 platter?

Tuffy, I am truly envious. You have a 2000X with a gunmetal platter. Bravo sir. It is a leap of faith to buy one of those turntables and near miraculous to get a gunmetal platter to go with it.

By all means; Get your cartridge set up properly. If I had invested the amount of geld in a turntable that you have, I would go to the following page and consider the information:

http://www.arche-headshell.de/alignment-tools/

You have a YOP-1 or equivalent?
Hi Theo

Yes I have the Yop-1 it was the first piece of equipment I acquired. It is amazing how well the brakes work - just 2 revolutions to stop.
I found the ygt-1 next and the deck last.
I’m going to inspect this link you set
Thanks

I can see that you did your homework before you bought anything GT 2000 related. What has been your previous turntable experience? Decades veteran or otherwise?

My first deck was a Luxman in the 80’s
Moved to Haybrook/UK then to a Linn
Then nothing lost interest in audio

After a wile I got the vinyl itch again
and I rediscovered the Yamaha PF800 in 2004... the funky split tonearm made me hesitant but I went for it anyway.
... and as soon as I was able to find the PF 1000 i made the switch.

I kind of understood the Yamaha science with the material and extra weight for the platter design- when I upgraded from the pf-800 to the pf1000. So the YGT-1 made sense to me.

I thought about getting the GT-2000 at that time...but the Stepdown transformer voltage scared me... I thought it would effect the rpm speed, sound quality and I didn’t know anyone who had one so...
Also, I never owned a DD, always belt drive.
So I abandoned the search back then for GT2000

I eventually grew out of the pf line and started back tracking searches of decks and found this thread...

I really thought about what you were saying about the GT-2000 its worth and how it was the original and the x came much later. So I made the decision to do it...

But it was my intention to get the 2000 not the x
It kind of just happened, the opportunity presented itself and I had to make a quick decision ... not living in Japan you have to rely on goodwill of the folks involved... it paid off.
So I’m fortunate to have good friends

That's fantastic Tuff...the PF-800 ultimately led me to the GT. What cartridges did you run on the PF's? What cart is currently on your 2000x?

Tuffy, this is my request:

When you feel ready to consider your assessment of the turntable. Start a new thread about your 2000x/YGT/YOP/YSA-1 and post a link here so that we get to read it also.
Theo,
Will do

One Question
I have not seen an image of a YSA-2 with the
Auto-lifter YAL-1
Is the auto lift compatible?

I read somewhere that the YAL-1 is not compatible with the YSA-2 but the YAL-1 is mentioned in the YSA-2 manual so it may actually work. I'll have my translator look at the YSA-2 manual.

Clearaudio mm on pf 800
The pf1000 and currently I’m using
Shelter 501 mc

How bout you?

AT-33ptg/ii on the PF-800 but I have an AT-160ml & AT-33ml/occ I want to try with it.

Still using MC-1x on the YA-39 arm. I didn't really much like the YA-39 arm til I tried this cart. There are so many carts I want to try on both the YA-39 & YSA-1.

I have to ask: Did you raise your arm?

Yes, it had to be raised. The great thing about these Yamaha tonearms is that you can mark the tonearm height with a pencil on the main supporting pillar which helped when doing the A/B testing.

It’s quite interesting that a few of us also owned or still own the PF-800, myself included. Very attractive table.

I had one as well, but I moved it along after a back to back shootout with the PX-2. Also the spring suspension did not agree with my flooring. Too much tip-toeing for me...

So Tuff, it specifically says in the YSA-2 manual that it will not work with the YAL-1.

It later says that you should carefully unplug the five pin connector when removing the YSA-1 upper arm (with a YA-39 pictured) and never again mentions hooking it back up. The YSA-2 is a full manual arm it would seem.
