Hurricane Helene

I have friends and family, mostly in Rutherford County (Chimney Rock/Lake Lure/HIckory) and have been in communication with them. The lack of power, water (potable), internet and cell service is devastating. I grew up about 20+ mile from Lake Lure.

Helene in the mountains is a once in a thousand year occurrence. However there was a comparable event in 1916. The Great Flood of 1916 occurred in July when remnants of one Cat 3 storm from the Gulf coast and a Cat 2 storm from the East coast hit the mountains. The rains continued for 10 days straight, including 22" in one 24 hour period in some areas. Almost all the dams failed, French Broad River crested at 21', the nearby Swannanoa River was a mile wide, and an estimated 80 people died.

I believe the French Broad crested at 23 feet this time, although I have heard some reference that storm

I have an old musician friend about 25mi south of Greenville. Said they had a tornado about 100yd from the house, tore up trees. Power, Cellular, is all down. They have quite a sizable solar backup, and lots of food. Emergency services are scarce to nonexistent, and there's been gunfire at the gas station. Hoping they don't drop into full anarchy. Local National Guard group claims to have been spinning up to get to work helping but was told to stand down.

Anyone with a transport/trucking background? Check the load boards for FEMA loads? word on the street is that activity is unusually low for this magnitude of event.

The Caldwell County courthouse has a bunch of pictures of the that flood. Lenoir, NC was basically a lake. Soon afterward, Lake James, Lake Rhodhiss, and Lake Hickory were built by Duke Power. The projects were probably an easy sell after that storm.

It would be interesting to see photos. I’ve only seen written material. The dam that created Lake Lure was also built as a direct result of the flood, completed in 1926.

Yeah, my friend, was, or still is?, a pretty big guy (like football line blocker) sized, and when he would sometimes stop by my electronic repair shop in 1981 to visit and he could and did sometimes readily just for fun snatch my ~ 140lb body up and placing his big hands on my hip and shoulder bench press me towards the shop`s ceiling several times in a row !

A real gentle giant German friend from 1975 who liked to party hardy (self acclaimed "Heavy Hitter" from Miami FL.!)

I hope his very elderly mother and my friend are safe and sound and kicking back with ample supplies of food, and able to get water from their well, or run through a filter(s) from the creek.

Thank you very much, for offering about finding out anything you can about the Cold Creek Rd. area`s condition situation, Govany, Sir., as that`s very kind of you, and appreciated very much by me.
It sounds like the area where your friend lives got hit pretty hard, I'm told the main road is completely washed out after 30 inches of rain fell there..
Wish I had some good news to share..

Your sad news about Burnsville`s Cold Creek Rd`s area is not unexpected, based on the multiple video footage offerings from drones and on site ground level GoPro walk about that I saw the other night on YouTube provided footage of the area`s destruction !
My friend is pretty mechanical and electrically skill set adept, and a resourcefully adaptive individual, after all he survived Miami`s Andrew`s high powered destructive fury and the rebuilding aftermath, all the while camping out at his parent`s hurricane trashed house in 1991.

He owns some kind of a rugged off road type 4 wheeler and I`m sure that if he survived and not terribly injured and if the buggy is not destroyed, if needed, he could siphon gas from his big Crown Vic sedan and mother`s car for fuel if needing to for forays out for food, if not already well stocked at their house, or unattached garage, that hopefully are still intact !

All I can do is wait for him to contact me, if, and when he can.
When he first got a cell phone some yrs. back, there was no coverage available at their house`s remote location at that time so we only communicated via e-mail, so with the Burnsville NC. area`s infrastructure still quite trashed, I`m not inclined to try to call him.
My POTS land line telephone # is unchanged for over thirty yrs. so I`m here if he physically can and does call.

Thank you for checking out the Cold Creek area`s situation for me, Govany.

You are very welcome Bill Ferris..Cold Creek rd. Is part of the Cattail Creek community, used to love going trout fishing there as a kid when my grandparents still lived in that area..
Good news is help is arriving for the places that have been cut off..it's like a war zone with all the choppers in the air

Delayed response is due to not being able to get into areas. Bradenton FL beach was destroyed. The beach is basically gone a long with homes there. Sand is plowed out on both sides of the road like snow after a huge northern storm. 7pm to 7am curfew in effect and you can only walk in. They need to clear the roads to get relief vehicles in and out. The federal and state response has been great. I have friends in the Tampa area. Shortage of workers to repair the catastrophic damage as expected.

‘There’s nothing there’: The beloved town of Chimney Rock, N.C., is virtually gone

One of my best friends Mark and his wife live in Black Mountain. The wife and I took an anniversary trip down there in October 2022 - and we stayed at the Switzerland Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We spent the day with Mark - we visited the Chimney Rock park, saw the waterfall that was in Last of the Mohicans, and we had lunch at a fine little pub called the Chimney Rock Brewery in Chimney Rock.

It was a gorgeous nice day - we ate outside on the deck above the Broad River - the fisherman side of me got excited as I looked down with my polarized sun glasses and could see numerous trout swimming in the pool directly beneath us. Excellent food and drink.

I've seen various videos and photos - where that pub stood, along with many other businesses is now river bed. The ground itself is gone - even the ROAD is gone.

How do you ever recover from that? It would take hundreds and hundreds of 10 wheel dump truck loads of stone and dirt to even build the land back for the road. Does it even make sense to rebuild given the now obvious hazard?

It's just terrible. I'm feeling under the weather this week with a cold, but when I'm feeling better and my friend has power restored at his home (I need my Cpap) I'm going down there with a Jeep load of supplies (our Global Methodist church will take up a collection) and spend a few days volunteering doing whatever to help the folks of Black Mountain out.

We visited the Chimney Rock Brewery and Flower Bridge last fall with our friends (John & Sparkle) who lived nearby in Bostic. It was such a relaxing place. Sadly that is gone along with my friends. Tough memories for me. They were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a week apart. He died in December and she followed in January.

We had a flood event here in Colorado a decade ago that reminds me of what is happening in the mountain communities after Helene. Fly a drone over the areas and you will see the canyons and valleys that were carved out by rain events over many millennium. Its better to build overlooking the valley instead of right next to rivers in mountain valleys that funnel massive amounts of water during rain events. Seems simple enough but the lure of waterfront property is strong even with historical data readily available of past flood events in these same areas.

I grew up across the street from a river but my father built on a elevation that was a couple of feet higher than the historical water mark. It was out in the boonies and it is amazing to see all the new homes built where I used to see 2 to 3 feet of water covering farmland when tropical depressions came through. Recently there was a rain event that produced 18" of rain in a day and many of them pretty new homes built in the last 30 years were swamped with water. Thankfully that part of Louisiana is flat so we didnt have to deal with swift currents like mountain communities during floods and it usually resulted in minor cleanups instead of rapid currents washing entire homes away.

My grandpas fishing camp was in this picture, sobering reminder of mother natures power. All these camps were built on stilts, but being 10' up in the air was a bit low for a 18' surge.

There are folks trying to exploit this disaster for their own purposes with deliberate disinformation, at least as disgusting as looting the victims and the wreckage. Politics or not, it has become an unwelcome negative factor with relief efforts.

Agreed - everything has become political as the election gets closer. Dangerous and horrid misinformation posts and outright lies
are present from inside and outside the US ... (I won't quote any of them due to AK rules) .
I recall that some folks were reported trying to make money on false Katrina fundraising efforts, but nothing like what's going on now!
Whew!
No links or specifics, please - general comments is as close as we can get.
(Understand that I trust AP News since I actually worked as a technician for AP Network News in DC circa 1992-3,
they strive to be non-partisan, but we have got to keep AK above all of that.)

Disinformation continues to impede relief efforts.

From AP;
"---baseless claims around the response to Helene, which caused catastrophic damage from Florida into the Appalachian mountains and a death toll that rose Sunday to at least 230, have created a sense of fear and mistrust from residents against the thousands of FEMA employees and volunteers on the ground."
“We’ve had the local officials helping to push back on this dangerous -- truly dangerous narrative that is creating this fear of trying to reach out and help us or to register for help,"
