How do you like the Dali MS5 with Mac? I'm using mine with a MC402/C2200 combo and while I love the sound overall, I think the Mac may not get all the bass the speaker is capable of. I have a JL sub so it's not a issue as such, but without the sub in the chain the bass seems a bit weak to my ears. What do you think?

I love the Dali MS5's with Mac tubes and actually prefer it over Mac SS, at least in the comparison that I made, which was limited to the MA6900, so YMMV when moving up the chain. I will say that Dali highly recommended tubes in response to my email inquiry and I have not been dissapointed. The tonal balance was more to my liking while prior to that I felt as you did but it seemed mostly dependent on the recording than anything else; when bass was present it was always very impressive. You may remember we communicated by email over at another audio web site (apparently we're not allowed to mention:no:) when you were exploring the sub purchase, still enjoy the Fleetwood CD, no?:thmbsp:

Dali MS5

Yes, still listening to the Fleetwood CD amongst others. Check out the new Levon Helm CD, good music and sound too. I recall our conversation regarding bass and the Dali MS5. It's not something I stress about to the point I'm looking to try another speaker. I was just wondering if it wasn't actually the Dali's that were deficient in the bass, but the amp that isn't synergistic in some way. For example, aside from trying a tube amp, I was thinking something like a Krell or something similar would bring out more bass.
 
B&W 804. I love them and had a chance to have my dads 803 passed down to me and give my little brother my 804. Problem I do NOT like how large the 803 are in my room, so keeping the 804. Really a great speaker for what it is.

If I ever had the money to buy whatever I wanted, I would have to go with Wilson Audio Watt Puppies and B&W 800 sig next. Tried to listen to some Revels but they hurt my ears too much (and you can tell I don't mind some speakers that some consider "bright"). Revels really disappointed me. I just can't deny how good the Wilsons sounded. AMAZING. I was slightly disappointed when I heard some 800 sig in the next room, BUT in fairness, the 800 sig were powered my a 5 channel Proceed amp, while the Wilsons were powered by Levinson monoblocks, so not really a fair comparison. Not only is $ a factor regarding the Wilsons, but they are so damn ugly (my opinion) that my wife would never go for it, and I am not sure I would either).
 
Have: My not-quite-as-old-as-I-am Mc Stereotech 3s, after considerable refurbishment/repair.

Want: Hales Signature 3s, or a bigger set of Maggies than my wife would countenance, or (realistically) XR1051s

Yep. Now the LS II is $5500 a pair.
The bass is much improved.
Doesn't need many watts.

Klipsch is now using 1" MDF in it's construction rather than the 3/4" they've used before. The flexing of the sides of the cabinet was absorbing some of the bass output. The bottom end rolloff is still around 50Hz though. Pretty much the reason I didn't get a pair.

According to the spec sheet, the La Scala in 1975 was made from 3/4" plywood and I seem to recall it was birch cabinet ply. The response indicates 45-17,000 Hz ±5 dB with a max THD or 1.0% at 100 dB SPL.

The La Scala is different for any other speaker in that it's sensitivity is 104 dB SPL at 1 watt and 4 ft. The dynamic response of these systems is truly astonishing and very much like a live performance. You'd really need to audition a pair.

Audition a pair!?? I'm a lot closer to the source than you may think. But I'm not going there...not here. I heard the LS II's before anyone here did and before any announcment was made of there existance.

The materials may indeed be from Birch plywood but the rolloff figure came straight from the re-designer mouth. I was there, in person when he said it.:thmbsp:
 
I have my La scala II's in a room about 16" x 16". They are in corners and pointed right at my head in the listening position.

I think my room is helping me....The bass is quick and hard hittin....to much of my surprise.

I had La scala originals from 88' and they were nothing of the kind....same position and same equipment. Bass was not tight.

The LS II's aren't going to work well to hear the LF from movie sources or other things like pipe organs and such. I listen to a lot of funk and metal. The bass is very nice. I have thrown a sub in there now and then and it just makes the music messy.

Tom.....did I miss it? What speakers are you using?
