Lot's of criteria to judge a frontman on here. Hard to judge all time, since most of us couldn't have possibly seen all the candidates live, due to a 50 year run and we went to see the bands we liked and not as talent scouts. So, I would just have to give examples of people who did extraordinary things, such as Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart, who are still relavant 40+ years, lived the lifestyle, and still rockin'. I have to discount Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis, because the were a one man band, so the premise of a "frontman" doesn't apply in this case. As far as creating personas that was all entertainment and mixing in talent an creativity, I vote for Alice cooper. As far as changing the landscape of rock and roll, being as crazy on the stage as off, for being vocally and musically diverse, and giving us an athletic performance on the stage as one will ever see, all the while getting the girls and circumventing the Other wacked-out personalities, some being more talented as he, would be David Lee Roth. Bon Scott is also of this kind of embodiment, as his lyrics and delivery are unsurpassed (Curt Cobain, RIP, had nothing on this guy!) Freddie Murcury comes to mind as the most talented, fronting a most talented band. Had a long run, ended in tragedy, and all the while stayed true to the band, the craft, and the theatrical component he gave to the performances. He could evoke emotion like few others, and gave each performance his all, and performed until the end, even though He looked liked a dweeb he was as tough as nails.
But strip away the theatrics, the biz pressures, the pomp and circumstance. Envision what rock and roll is all about. Live performances. Great lyrics and catchy hooks, great songs and blistering licks. A band you can say never sold out to corporate America. A band that plays for it's fans and appreciate's them. They had brief top 40 success, as well as a briefly popular MTV video. But the most amazing thing is they started in the mid sixties and are still playing for their fans to this day. The lineup hasn't changed. the lead singer is also the lead guitarist. Extremely difficult, and he's been doin' it for over 40 years. Not flashy, but his vocals are unique and hard to emulate. His voice and his licks can be harsh on the ears at times, but he front's a truly rock and roll band, does it in the most difficult way, and just play's rock and roll. It's too bad that this band's biggest followers are in Japan. They are the essence of rock and roll and Dave Miniketti is the ultimate frontman. The band started out as Yesterday and Today, and quickly became known as Y & T. Extraordinary because of the 40 year run, never sold out, plays lead guitar as well as lead vocals, enjoyed comercial success as well as an international following, never cared about the show as much as the performance of the music, and kept the band in tact, and doesn't care that he's old and fat, just belts out the songs and plays the guitar like it was on fire. I've seen longer careers, better shows, more theatrics, extraordinary talent, more emotional performances, and against all odds hijackery of the opening band leaving the headliner with their collective tail between their legs, but never have I seen a band continue to just play their version of rock and roll to anyone who will listen, for over 40 years. And I can still buy the cd's and find their albums. But most folks here have never heard of them. Rock and roll for the ages
