Most underated classic rock lp's

ELO - Out of the Blue - The ultimate in excessive, over the top 70's rock. Just huge in scale and production. Get a really big system and envelope yourself in "Concerto for a Rainy Day". ELO's high point. And also the beginning of the end.

ELO - Eldorado - Including this one too, even though it is starting to get some recognition. Jeff Lynne really figured out with this album what ELO is all about. Not as pop or mainstream as the later stuff.

Hey! Another ELO fan (and not afraid to admit it :D). I'll agree about "Out of the Blue". That's one for the ages. How many double albums can be played without wanting to skip at least one song? OOTB is one. But "On the 3rd Day" smokes Eldorado.

Which i could never understand. I found Slowhand as really bland, mediocre record. I sold my copy to a Clapton fan.

Well you know Slowhand has three of Clapton's biggest hits and concert regulars: Lay Down Sally, Cocaine and Wonderful Tonight. I like Next time you see her, but the rest of the songs, specially side B is pretty week.

Rarer than rocking horse s**t too. You'll be lucky to find an original unless you either ransack my collection or search for you're remaining years on earth. Even then you'll have to cough up about £2500.
But it did get repressed a few years back. Bit hard to find still, but do-able.
Cracking album, and possibly the holy grail of underrated classic rock.
For fans of Zeppelin, Atomic Rooster, Cactus, (early) Foghat and Uriah Heep.

Can-Tago Mago
Television-Marquee Moon
The Stooges-Fun House
Iggy Pop-The Idiot
Eno Moebius Roedelius-After the Heat
Hawkwind-Warrior on the Edge of Time
Talking Heads-Remain in Light
Bob Dylan-Freewheelin' Bob Dylan...
These are just a few of my favs, but the list goes on and on. Good luck!

MOST UNDERRATED of all time, for me, would be Magma's "Mekhanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" (MDK) which some days i feel it's the best thing ever commited to tape in the story of modern tape recording. Truly at the level of the Greats like Beethoven/Stravinsky/Orff etc.

Well, maybe Orff.....or FZ channeling Orff..... but "Classic" rock??? :)

There are some great songs on MF's "Another Mother Further". Leon Russell's debut album has some sweet playing. I don't know if it's underrated, but you don't hear it played anymore. I recently bought the remastered "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" and it is a great live album.

A number of problems kept The Kinks from being as popular in the US as they should have been. "The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society" and "Muswell Hillbillies", although not exactly rock, are great records.

Can anybody turn me on to some great classic rock LP's that are underated and that you really like??

I am lookin to expand my collection.

60's-70's classic rock

Thanks

I know you'll probably never read this since there are so many great suggestions, but;

The Pretty Things "S.F. Sorrow" a must have!

Love "Forever Changes", also worth getting are "False Start" and "Da Cappo".

Spirit "12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" (very common, I know, but a must have).

Procol Harum "A Salty Dog"

The McCoys (yes, those McCoys!) "Infinite McCoys"

The Kinks "Muswell Hillbillies" and "Lola vs The Powerman and The Moneygoround" although you can't go wrong with any of The Kinks stuff up to about '71 IMO.

Mott the Hoople "Wildlife" The original mixed up kid!

The New York Dolls-Too Much Too Soon

Pink Floyd-Piper at the Gates of Dawn

ELP-Brain Salad Surgery

I know it's a strange mix....

This is one of my favorite Rock albums from the group called Automatic Man.

Their sound on this album is Jimi Hendrix's Band Of Gypsys + David Bowie + Yes.

Highly recommended.

+1 I really spun this album untold times.

And Captain Beyond Sufficiently Breathless, I really like that album as well.

I still have both of them.

Autograph's That's the Stuff + Loud and Clear. For a band that toured with a lot of the rock legends of that time, RCA wouldn't promote them, and that killed them before they were even born. Those albums are extremely underrated, especially Loud and Clear. It shows 80's hair metal at it's finest, right before Dr.Feelgood and New Jersey. I have both albums, along with Sign in Please (underrated also, but Turn up the radio still gets airtime on clearchannel stations) and the white label promotional of the single "Loud and Clear".

I came out of the closet about ELO years ago. Not that there is anything wrong with it....

OTTD has always been one of my favorites, but I find that it is not as consistent as Eldorado. Side A I'd awesome. Side B, not so much.

I'll second Manassas, and add:

ZZ Top: Tres Hombres

James Gang Rides Again

The Band: Music From The Big Pink
