I'm divorced and this is what I get:
Might that room's appearance be the REASON for the divorce? That looks cool to my (and most guys') eyes, but as the thread title said, "What happens when there is no WAF?" A divorce, perhaps?
I generally like everything neat and well-organized and clean. However, the place CAN get pretty messy if I'm doing some serious gear-swapping. I try to do that stuff when my wife is not at home, and get everything back into place before she returns, as I know she doesn't like the "gear all over the place" approach to decor.
Actually, right now I have two stacks of gear on wheels temporarily in the living room, and so far she has tolerated them without explosion because she knows that they are there ONLY because they are all for sale, and will only be there for a little while (both of which are true!). If she even thought they'd be staying there, I'd probably be single soon enough, too. Still, I've seen her look at the stacks once or twice with a slightly unhappy look, so I know the clock is ticking and I'll have to get them gone soon --either sold, or else moved back into "invisible" storage.
I've noticed one thing about my wife: she reacts to the immediate visible appearance of the place, more than the reasons for that appearance. I react more to the reasons why something is where is is. If there is some visible "clutter" in the living room, even in the form of just a single piece of nice gear like the SX-1980, that is additional to what was there before, she is not in such a good mood. If there is a visible reduction in the visible volume of "clutter" (and any audio gear that she doesn't use is "clutter"!

), then the mood improves. It doesn't matter if the explanation is truly that the stuff is on it's way out, or that it is temporarily moved there so I can get at stuff behind it in the store-room and sell that other stuff, reducing the total... in fact, explanations are usually almost worthless: she is reactive purely to the immediate visual appearance of the room.
So I've learned to only do those gear-swapping or clearing-out things that allow me to put everything unused back out of sight before she returns. I'm in the process of thinning out the herd (the unheard?

), and she supports that idea, but I could actually clear out even more gear, even faster, if I could leave more of it out and visible for longer periods, but usually that backfires when she comes home and sees it, so even though my wife actually wants me to get rid of the collected gear, her actual behavior slows down that process considerably.
Women - can't live without 'em, and sometimes its hard to live with them!
{That said, my wife is pretty good-hearted, and if we didn't live in an apartment with limited space, it wouldn't be any issue at all. She'd be happy to let me pile gear and play with it in a basement or garage or extra room, if we had the space. It isn't the hobby she objects to, nor the actual amount of gear nor the money spent on it. She just doesn't want it encroaching on the space that she spends her time in. Fair enough.}
