Yamaha GT-2000 Turntable Social Group

I inventoried all my cartridges on Sunday. I discovered I have quite a few! And in that pile, I have the following;

Empire M1000 ED - Yamaha GT-2000L - I put this on the GT-2000L after my Shure V15 type 4 stylus tip came off. Both my wife and I really like it! Very similar to the Shure V15 type 4, and much better than any other cartridge I've tried on it.

Empire MC plus 20 - I tried it on the GT-2000L, and I didn't like it. Lots of distortion, although it played at close to my normal output levels. I read that these are LOMC and HOMC. I'm suspecting that this one is a HOMC, but wondering if maybe the impedance is wrong. Any thoughts?

I thought I would put this out here, because I don't recall anyone trying any Empire cartridges on the GT-2000.

Newbie here, and forum decorum ignoramus. If I accidentally highjacked something please set me straight.

I’m sure this has been discussed but if anyone wouldn’t mind, how does running a 50Hz GT-2000 on US 60Hz make a difference? Does the quartz lock correct for this? Using the 24v power supply mitigate any issue?

Thanks Guys!

Welcome here Yama85!
Technically it doesn't make any difference if the internal power supply is run on 50 or 60Hz since power will be rectified to DC and then the motor electronics have a chrystal that is divided down to a much lower frequency that is compared to the FG servo signal coming out from the motor. Then this will make a closed loop control system. It's even true that this closed loop system will compensate for small fluctuations in the DC voltage.
For the transformer itself it will use littlebit higher power from the mains if it is run on 50Hz vs being run from the 60Hz because the inductance will cause slightly higher current flow in the windings but it's still within any critical limits. I mean 50Hz will not affect the transformer to run alot hotter than with 60Hz so that will be safe enough since Yamaha stated 50/60Hz on the plate for the GT-2000.

Don't worry about that. This thread is for anything to do with the Yamaha GT-2000. And your question is GT-2000 related.

I was using a power converter on mine until I got a YOP-1 knock-off rated for my power. I prefer the YOP-1 solution. So much more elegant.

Welcome to the forum!

At some point I will completely desolder/remove the power cord from my GT and put a nice little cap where it normally comes out of the chassis. I don't plan on selling my GT ever and the cord is simply superfluous. 24V or nothing for me.

So I’ve looked around and I see where folks have looked for an English version of the manual, has this ever been completed? I started doing it, on page 4. Pretty tedious cut and paste, so if it exists I’d like to shelf it.

However, if you can read Japanese, or know someone who does, your input would be valued.

This is rough portion of what I have been doing. Word for word translation is really hard, perhaps you can all help me edit things that don’t make as much sense in English, this is as expert a group on the GT-2000 as you’ll find anywhere. But, it’ll give you an idea of how it will look

This is great! There were a few some spots I saw that were a little confusing. I also saw your note on cleaning the unit. I'll send my comments later when I'm fresher.

The "sound etiquette" comment about being considerate of the neighbors is hilarious and very Japanese (as viewed by someone who lives with a Japanese person).

Im runnning GT-2000 -> CA-2010 in class A -> 4 NS-690s, and sometimes even use a Yamaha MC-5 cartridge, the only thing not Yamaha are the speaker cables.
Excellent, my TT should be arriving from Unisound soon, I hope in one piece. I’m hoping to have a c series pre-amp fixed and an m-85 recapped. Right now I’ve got an A-520 running NS-1000M. I’ve have my original Yamaha system since I was a kid, lately I wanted to see if I could build the system I couldn’t touch as a teenager. I was fortunate to know the east coast Yamaha manager as a kid.

You know you want to be an audiophile when you realize you can’t ever be an audiophile. This thing is a vortex with no end

Yama85 many thanks. I'd been using Google translate on my phone for 'live' translation
It’s tedious, yet a good project. But I think as a group, editing it to function is more important than word for word copying, some if it just won’t come across right no matter how I try.

The M-85 should be perfectly suited to power NS-1000M's. I use mine to power my NS-1000x's and it sounds wonderful.
