Yamaha GT-2000 Turntable Social Group

I'm going to ask a few of you guys a question:

I see that many of you have been upgrading your systems, big time. Have any of you felt that the GT 2000 was the weakest link in the upgraded system? In other words, with the upgrade of other areas of the complete system, did you feel that the GT was able to keep pace and 'scale'up' with the other improvements?

I see that you guys seem pretty happy with your GTs. Am I just seeing what I want to see?

I find the main limitation not to be quality but having only one tonearm. I like having mono + stereo without the need for two turntables.

As long as both cartridges work with the one arm you can accommodate that by having two headshells.

Yes! And if you don't mind matching the weights (or TW in some cases) by adding a little weight to the lighter one, it becomes plug and play.

I wonder what the sonic differences between gunmetal & stainless steel would be and how much of the differences would still be evident if you used any kind of platter mat.

Matching the weights would be requirement to make it easy to change headshells fast. I've been more tempted to get rid of the dustcover and put another arm on a pod like this from Theophile's earlier post:

Good to hear from you Plato.

Mark: That platter is f#@*ing gorgeous. I want a SS and a Copper platter. They are both stunning. That company does a superb job. Thanks sunnyday.

And the best part is that you can order an aftermarket YGT-1 in copper or stainless steel (or gunmetal) any time you feel like it. A huge thank you to sunnyday for finding this fabricator.

Fabrication of the stainless steel aftermarket YGT-1 platter is completed and the platter is en route. :jump:

Congrats Mark, that looks awesome and will in my opinion provide a sonic improvement.

My own experience with the Micro Seiki CU 180 copper mat, see below, is that it provides a noticeable improvement in detail resolution. I have no doubt that you will get even better results with that beast.

Well, after about two months of finding cart that will be compatible with GT 2000, I have already choose one!
Below is my opinion about carts I have tested:
1. Shure V-15 type V - to compliant for YA-39, not usable.
2. Denon DL-103 - to much bass, not enough detailed, for me nothing special.
3. Ortofon Quintet Black S - super detail, bass, mids, treble, great for every kind of music, but after longer listening i was tired.
4. Ortofon SPU Royal - Nearly good, first impression was good, I've never heard this kind of sounding cart, good detail, almost smooth like i want to be, but mids are to dominant.
I knew that SPU's is way i want to go.
5. Otrtofon SPU Classic GM E MkII - Better sounded then Royal, smooth, super bass sound super natural, musically but... not enough detailed for me.
Final one - Otrtofon SPU Synergy GM - for me best cart I've ever heard, super natural - voices are spectacular, instruments sounded like live, super smooth, enough detailed. I find also that this cart are most forgiving for poor sounded and worn records I've ever heard. 100% pure analog sound, great.

So, thats not all, here is my new project, first prototype was made, two arms design, GT 2000 heart, impressions soon...

OMG, I need to pick my jaw off the floor. That is amazing. You mention that it is a prototype. What are your plans for the finished project, veneer's etc?

So FedEx dropped off my GT2000 this morning.
I can’t believe it took me 4 years of watching auctions to pull the trigger on this, it just blows my Sony out of the water.

That looks super sweet. If you start making those I’d definitely be interested.

Congrats and welcome to the club. What cartridge did you install.

Right now I just have a AT-32E that it came with. When spare headshells arrive Thursday I’ll move my Denon 103 and Grado and try them out on the Yamaha. Eventually I’ll probably end up with a Hana SL or an Art9

Grace 747, light mass 5g tonearm. I have only this arm right now, and i put it on for first test with Shure V15, but in comparison with SPU it sounds poorly.
More arms soon...

Next step - magnetic isolation build in the plinth.
I'm waiting for genuine YOP-1 from Yapan and think it will arrive next week, so I will made a clone and I will throw the internal transformer away.
After all technical/electronic movements, I will be working about the look, only top plate will stay for sure it was made of CORIAN.
