Pioneer SX-800 Resistor replacement - composite vs carbon opinion

Hi all, I'm refurbishing a Pioneer SX-800 tube receiver. I've done this for several receivers, but this unit seems to have a sizeable number of "composition" resistors. I'm assuming this is a carbon-composition instead of the plain carbon film resistor. (Correct me if wrong) I've read that...

    Dynaco ST-70 bias resistors

My 1962 stereo 70 is all original with the exception of recently replacing the circuit board (stayed with original 7199 circuit) the selenium rectifier to a 1N4007 and the two bias filter caps to 100uF 100v. My right bias pot is loose and not stable. My meter is all over the place if I touch...

    G7700 2980 board resistors

Hello again. I’m working on my 7700 and need info for the resistors in the 2980 board. The service manual is very sketchy when listing parts. I have the newer unit with only 2 output transistors per channel. The resistors in question are R15,16. I pulled them and they got mixed in with...

    HELP! Can't find these resistors!

I have a Marantz SR5100 that needs some resistors. The resistor in question is the JRM "KNYS 3W R33 K". It is a three-pronged resistor that I can't seem to find anywhere else (I've attached the diagram). No electronic distributors, that I could find, sell them either. I was wondering if there...

My amp board wiring is not exactly like the schematics

I have both amp boards out and was just checking the resistor values and I noticed something. If you look at the pics the resistor R785 (yellow arrow) is a short when it is suppose to be a 3.9ohm resistor. Is this normal or should i put a resistor with the right value? Why is it like this?

BA 5000 resistors on F-2518 board

I am confused about two of the resistors on this board. Attaching 2 photos, 1 is from my system (on the right) and the other I found in another thread. R27 and R28 The SM calls for a 560k ohm 1/2 watt resistor for both. My board has a 560 in both locations. OK, I am assuming that the SM has...

Realistic STA-225 Two disconnected wires on underside of tuner.

Hello all, I am servicing a Realistic STA-225 and am pretty sure I popped these two connections loose. I replaced two capacitors on the tuner board, and had to move the schmidt trigger board out of the way. I made a rookie mistake and did not take pictures before I started. Pictures included of...

Passing light through AMP PCB reveals exposure to elevated heat

Hi everyone For the last 4-5 days I have been buried in measuring every resistor on a NAD 7240PE's AMP PCB. The PCB suffered a failure years ago and was shelved. I thought it was time to learn electronics — wow what a trip. Anyway, after having measured every resistor value and comparing my...

Resistor Fail Modes in Vintage Receiver (Marantz)

Hi All, Do you know what might be the most probable failure mode for a resistor within a vintage receiver? The context: I recently opened up my Marantz 2220B for a cleaning and I realized a resistor within the power supply assembly board (R805; 330 ohms, 2W, 5%) looked very discolored with dark...

Capacitor & Resistor Schedules used by Yamaha

Has anyone created a translation list of the symbols used by Yamaha? There are many components that are called for that appear to be a "Mystery of the Universe" Sorry to say I have discovered many more along this line.

Kenwood KR-6400 lights out. Blown fuse?

My very first receiver was a Kenwood KR-5400, which was stolen from my very first apartment when I was in college. Recently, I found a 6400 with a few dark lights (one VU meter and the STEREO indicator lamp). Being the optimistic novice that I am, I thought I could fix it. It appears that the...

    Vandersteen Model 1 crossover

Came across this burned resistor in a Vandersteen Model 1 crossover. Can anyone tell me the value of this resistor? It measured 12.7 ohms but since it may not be up to spec I hesitate to put a similar one in there. And the color codes seem way too high for the value. Anyone? Thanks.

    Resistors in Sansui Cross over

Hello, I’ve learned a lot on this forum and this is my first post. I have some Sansui SP-3500 and SP-2500 speakers I’m restoring. I have recapped them based on a posting I found here and had the woofers re-foamed by MillerSound. The one thing I haven’t done is replace the resistors. I can’t...

Dynaco A25s With 3.9 Ohm Resistors?

Hello everyone, I just recapped my A25s and aftering looking over some of the pictures I took I noticed these have 3.9 ohm and 4.7 ohm resistors where others I've seen have 2.2 ohms. Any reason for this? From what I can tell these have never been opened.

Proper Name for Type of Resistors

Can anyone tell me the proper name for the resistors I've attached a photo of (R1, R101, R4, R104)? I think they are some type of wire wound and perhaps used for protecting circuitry? They go to the Emitter circuit for the Audio Output transistors on a H. H. Scott 367 Receiver, Circa 1971/2...

    Resistor swap help

Hi! I have some amplifier recaps planned, and while checking over values of caps, i noticed something. One of the amps i plan to recap have some cracked resistors (just 2-3 of them), and another amp has some burned ones (or at least they look burned). So I thought I would just look up the...

Good resistors for MC30’s; where can I find them?

Looking to replace all the old carbon comp resistors with metal film but haven’t found a website that has all the values I need. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! I included a schematic so you can see what values I’m looking for and maybe get an idea of whether or no they are common...

Replacement Resistors for type A-116B MC30’s. Any suggestions?

I was advised to replace the resistors in my MC30’s by a local tube technician. He suggested metal film to replace the carbon comps. Would this be a good replacement? If so, what brand would you folks recommend? I’ve also looked at the schematic (attached below) and noticed that it calls for...

    Mcintosh MA230 Bias Voltage Resistors

I've had an MA-230 for about 3 years. It recently began humming as things this old will, so I put it on the work bench and popped the bottom off of it. First thing I noticed was three out four 15 ohm bias resistors were cracked, two of them severely so. Checked the schematic and it shows...

    Group Wisdom for carbon resistors

So the amp boards in the 2245 I'm working on have several carbon composite resistors and many carbon films. On my donor board just to see, I measured all of the composite carbon resistors and none are "out" of spec but a few are very close to being out of spec ( 5%) What is the group consensus...

    Sansui 9090 Red Protection Light

Hello All, First time poster on AK (longtime lurker!). I just got a 9090 (not a 9090db) from a thrift shop, so not sure about its history. Was definitely in a smoker's house due to tar all over it. VERY dusty/dirty inside so I vacuumed it out and did basic clean up. Got the dial lights working...

    KLH MODEL 5 RECAP Q'S

So...this is a pretty novice question on my part but people here have been such a huge help so here I am to ask about replacing resistors. I've recapped the Model 17, 23 and 6 but have never replaced the resistors so far. I'm about to recap a Model 5 and it replacing the caps doesn't worry me...

    Testing old resistors

When testing old carbon comp resistors in old equipment, my experience has been that more resistors drift high than low. Is that consistent with your experience? I first test all resistors in-circuit. If it's high, it's high, and it automatically gets replaced. Then, if I'm feeling...

Marantz SD 9000 Compudeck PK21 Board Question

Hi, all! I have previously posted about some issues I have been having with my Marantz SD 9000. I have replaced the notoriously bad optocouplers, and all belts and idler tires. What I neglected to notice were the burnt out resistors on the PK21 board of the machine. I purchased and replaced...

    MARANTZ 19 (channel issue)

Ok, so a guy brought a 19 into my shop with the left channel out. Two prior service attempts by others (new caps, yadda, yadda,) and still, no left channel, EXCEPT during "power down". While powering down the left channel kicks in. ANY IDEAS???
